Candle Magick

The use of coins in Peaceful Home spell-work has a long basis in history, as a matter of fact. One old spell for promoting peace in the home consists of dressing a blue candle with pennyroyal oil and setting it on a paper on which has been written the name of everyone in the household, crossed by the entire text of the 23rd Psalm of the Bible.

Four coins — usually four nickels or four dimes — are placed around the candle in the form of an equal-armed cross, oriented North, South, East, and West.

The coins that surround the candle should all be of the same denomination. Back in the days when women often did not have jobs outside the home and the husband brought home all the pay, it was said that the four coins should be ones that were freely given by the husband to his wife. Nowadays, when most women have their own jobs, that is probably not so important, but the idea of the four coins remains.

After the coins are put into place, the candle is lit and the 23rd Psalm is recited aloud. When the candle has finished burning, the coins are buried at the four corners of the house to let the work continue. The candle wax (and the paper the candle was sitting on) is buried under the house, thus again forming a five-spot pattern. If the house is built in such a way that you cannot get under it, the wax may be buried at the front door instead.

Old spells like this can be adapted for use by people who live in apartments, but how they do so is going to be unique to their own situation. In any case, it is important to properly dispose of the ritual remains of the spell by laying them in the corners.

Here’s the 23rd Psalm, King James version, if you need it:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

This is an old fashioned black candle Hoodoo revenge and retribution spell. Use with caution (if at all). These types of spells can easily rebound onto the spell caster.

Cut the top off a black jumbo candle, turn it upside down, and carve a new tip at what was the bottom. Carefully heat it a section at a time and press 99 whole pepper corns into it, all over the surface.

Place the candle in a saucer on top of the enemy’s name written on a piece of paper, and dress it by pouring a whole bottle of Crossing Oil over it.

At midnight, this mess is carried to a deserted crossroads, or, if possible, to the enemy’s yard while he or she is away. It is set down in the middle of a large X inside a circle made by walking backward while sprinkling Crossing Powder diagonally from one corner of the crossroads or yard to the other, and then around the X in a circle.

As the candle burns, a detailed list of the enemy’s sins is spoken aloud followed by the spell caster’s requirements for true, justified, and lasting retribution.

These are especially good measures to take when moving into a new place, beginning ritual activities in a new space, or to release bad feelings and negativity when an inhabitant has been sick or has died.

To cleanse a single room:

  • On top of a newspaper, set a blue candle.
  • Surround with a circle of salt.
  • Burn a little sage in the room.
  • Light the candle, making sure it won’t tip over.
  • Close the door and let the candle burn down.
  • When finished, take newspaper, salt, and candle
  • Leave the room and bury far from your home.

To cleanse a house:

  • Sprinkle a little salt at each doorway and window.
  • Burn sage in each room, paying special attention to windows and doors.

Cleansing with herbs:

Strew fragrant herbs (rosemary, basil, lavender, others you especially like). Sweep them up with the salt. Cast the swept herbs out your front door. Sweep them off your porch so they won’t get tracked back in.

Candles in the corners:

Select four corners. Set four candles – one in each corner, allow them to burn down.

  • North – black
  • East – white
  • South – purple or dark red
  • West – blue

Birthday rituals around the world are conducted and candles are placed on a cake and blown out, the one whose birthday it is, blows out the candles and makes a wish, this in itself is an act of magick, and the person blowing out the candles feels a sense of well being when this is done. The cake is then cut and eaten and those eating it each make a wish, by doing this they are participating in magick.

Many of us may remember making a wish and blowing out candles on our birthday cakes as kids; some of us still do this today, but when we were kids many of us were probably completely unaware that by making this wish by the light of a burning mini candle in an offering of flour and sugar we were working our first simple spells. With birthdays being a great day of astrological alignment for use, it’s a great time to set aside a few minutes to do some wish magick not unlike that stuff we did as kids.

One thing is the simple use of a small incantation when blowing out your birthday candles that you might be presented with. Recite this while visualizing your wish. When you blow out the candle see your wish and desire being carried on the smoke up to the Gods and the Universe to fulfill.

”A year has come,
A year has passed,
I’ll make my birthday wish at last.
Magick powers old and new,
Make my birthday wish come true!”

Candle magick is ideal on your birthday so even common, simple candle magick with a single candle in a color corresponding to your astrological sign, carved with your zodiac symbol and name, along with any runes or symbols representing a specific desire, can be a great way to cast a simple wish spell for yourself. Use these color correspondences to find your candle color:

  • Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Sky Blue
  • Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Lavender
  • Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): Red
  • Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Green
  • Gemini (May 21-Jun 21): Pink
  • Cancer (Jun 22-Jul 22): Silver
  • Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): Gold
  • Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Navy
  • Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Green
  • Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Red
  • Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Navy
  • Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Brown

I have also seen wish spells for birthdays that involve taking a piece of paper or parchment and inscribing it with a rune representing something you desire for the coming year and place it under a new potted plant. As you tend the plant in the coming year you are symbolically tending your desire represented on the paper under the pot.

Ideally magick worked on your birthday should be magick that might be considered “selfish” in nature. It’s a day to honor yourself and to prepare for seeing your wishes come to fruition over the next year. But, while doing that, also acknowledge and celebrate any accomplishments as well. Always give thanks for what you have before asking for more!

You can also use the cake itself as part of the magick. A birthday cake prepared with love brings positive energy to the recipient.

Food is a magickal tool and can be used for positive change in your life. The preparation of food, with a particular intention in mind, is old magic. Look at food as sacred, let the act of preparing, cooking and eating food be a sacred act. When preparing foods for specific magical purposes, cook with purpose and care. Keep your goal in mind, love, money, protection, health, fertility, sex, strength, psychic awareness. Always stir clockwise, clockwise motion is thought to be in harmony with the apparent movement of the sun in the sky, and has been linked with life, health and success.

It is never too early or too late to practice magick. So whenever your birthday is, give it a little bit more magickal consideration. It’s a day that is all about you, so honor yourself and the Divine within.

Best performed during the waning moon. Light a pink candle for self-love; anoint it with the oil of your choice. Next light a brown candle. Engrave the number of pounds you want to lose on it, then visualize banishing the excess weight. Runes can be carved on it if you wish. Incense can be burned; visualize the smoke carrying away the excess poundage. Adapt the spell to your own personal needs.

Items you’ll need:

  • Floating candles
  • A large bowl
  • Water
  • Matches
  • A pen

Create sacred space with candles, sage smudging, and setting up altars with powerful totems, or items of special significance.

If possible, stand or sit under the Moon. Allow yourself to feel a direct relationship to it, as a mover of the living waters of the Earth and within our own bodies.

Do a grounding exercise, to bring you out of the chatter of small talk and into ritual space. Feel the earth under your feet and shake out the tension in the body.

Place the large water-filled bowl in front of you, or in the middle of your gathering on a table.

Write what you are releasing on the candle that you will be floating. It’s not important that the writing shows up, just that the intention is there.

As you place the candle into the bowl, declare what you’re releasing.

Light the candle.

Allow yourself to feel the transfer of what you’re releasing to the candle. As a group focus on letting go into the water, holding hands if that feels right.

Celebrate this release by sharing a feast under the full Moon!

Allow the candle to keep burning in the bowl as a symbol of the letting go process. The flame is a purifier, and symbolizes the sparks of inspiration as well. If you blow out your floating candle, and your bowl is in your home, relighting it will remind you of your commitment. Place inspiring pictures and totems around it that remind you of who you’re becoming. Above all, give yourself kudos for honoring your own growth.

On a waning moon, on any day of the week except Saturday, place an ice cube into a bowl next to a white candle. Place lavender in a natural vessel (such as a shell) and white carnations in a vase with water.

Say aloud:

With the help of the guardians,
Goddess and God,
I ask that my fear gently be lifted from me.
As the ice melts
so does my resistance,
and as the water turns to air
my fear opens to spaciousness.
I ask that this be done with ease
and for the greater good.
And I release this with love and trust
and say
so be it.
And so it is.

Let the bowl remain in place until all the water has evaporated. Allow the candle to burn as long as you like.

When using fire and ice together, you are calling for a natural balance to take place. It can be a balance of the self, a balance of a situation, or even a balance of the checkbook. This is a great spell to do during an Eclipse.

You will need:

  • A large clear glass bowl
  • Equal amounts of water and ice
  • 3 floating candles (these can be multicolored, white, gray, or brown)
  • Handful of salt

Place the ice in the bowl. Add the salt and say, ” I cast off any negativity and purify this ice. It is blessed by the Goddess and the God.” Add enough water to make the surface smooth, and bless it in the same manner.

Place the candles in the bowl and say:

“I call upon my higher self
to bring my being into harmony.
I will myself to be balanced in all situations.
So mote it be!”

Clap your hands three times and light the candles. This is a good time to reflect on which areas of your life need balance the most. It also is a beautiful sight to sit and watch the ice melt while the flames dance. Spend an appropriate amount of time in reflection before you close your circle or leave the area.

Calling a situation into balance can be a bit tricky. For example, suppose you are upside down in your finances – more going out than you can bring in. You can use fire and ice to call for a balance. Here is a spell that can be used to bring balance to any situation.

You will need the following:

  • An empty paper milk carton (quart size)
  • Water, to fill the milk carton
  • A gray or brown taper candle as tall as the milk carton
  • A pencil
  • Piece of string
  • Cooking spray
  • Large bowl or cauldron (gallon size)
  • Sand or soil

Spray the inside of the carton with cooking spray. Tie the string to the wick of the candle. Wrap the other end of the string around the pencil. Place the candle in the milk carton and use the pencil to hold it upright by placing the pencil across the top of the carton. (You may cut small notches in the top of the carton if needed.)

Carefully fill the carton with water, leaving about an inch of the candle above the water line. Place it in the freezer. When the water is frozen solid, tear the carton away. Place the candle in your cauldron, or other large ceremonial bowl, to which a thick layer of sand or soil has been added.

Note: The bowl or cauldron must be deep enough that the layer of sand or soil will easily absorb all the melting ice without covering (and thus putting out) the lighted candle.

Say, “I call upon the universal forces of my Lord and Lady to bring balance to my life. I will that my current financial situation become balanced in the most beneficial way for me and my loved ones. As I will it, so it shall be.” (This can be reworded to fit your specific situation exactly.)

As you light the candle, visualize yourself happily spending and receiving money in perfect balance, always having enough for what is needed. Allow the candle to burn completely down, and then pour the water and sand out under a tree.

Another Note: This spell can be modified to fit any situation in which balance is needed. Simply change the wording of the spell, and visualize the desired balance.

Take a horse shoe and put it around a red candle. Put the candle in a darkened room in the middle of a table. Write what it is you want on a piece of paper with a quill pen dipped in black ink.

Chant the following as you write:

What I want I write here
Please take my dream and bring it near
What I want Is What I should get
Let all my dreams Now be met

Now take the paper and fold it in a square of four creases. Hold it over the candle with a pair of tweezers and let it burn. Picture yourself with your wish fulfilled as you burn the paper send waves of love at the image you conjure of your self.

We should educate people that ‘Witch’ is not evil but ancient and positive. The first time I called myself a ‘Witch’ was the most magical moment of my life.
