Earth

The first day of the new year is always a time to make promises or resolve to make the year a positive and prosperous one. With the help of the Roman God of new beginnings, Janus, and the Goddess Diana’s influence, you can step into the New Year with viable resolutions for the year ahead.

Diana was worshiped in the countryside, and gifts and offerings of fruit were left in forests or at crossroads. To invoke the power of Janus, salt and cakes were placed on a sacred altar. For this spell you’re going to combine the ingredients necessary into one special enchantment.

What you will need:

A handful of earth taken from each of the following places and gathered in a paper bag. (If you can’t get to any of these places, then three handfuls of earth from your own or a friend’s garden will also work.)

  • A crossroads
  • A forest, woods, or park
  • Beside a river, stream, or lake

You will also need the following:

  • 3 cupcakes
  • A tiny cup of sea salt
  • 2 white candles

The Spell:

Place the bag of earth in the corner of your altar to invoke the power of Diana’s abundance. Then place the three cupcakes in front of the bag, and lastly the tiny cup of salt at the front.

Now light the two candles to invoke your deities, and as you place them on either side of your offering, say or whisper the following:

“Diana, Janus, hear my prayer
and bless this sacred altar.

For all year long let earth’s riches empower me.
Let abundance bring me happiness.
Let your wholeness bring me prosperity.”

Say this three times, and then thank your deities.

“Thank you, Diana for your help.
Thank you, Janus, for your direction.”

Now leave the candles burning for a few minutes while you gaze at your altar and calm your mind.

Finishing Up

When you feel the spell is complete, leave the cup cakes at a crossroads or cemetery. If those places are not available or accessible to you, put them out for the birds. Empty the bag of earth somewhere outside where you feel really happy to be. As you sprinkle the earth on the ground, Janus and Diana will start to work the magick of prosperous living into your life.

Note:

This spell can be done at any time during the year when you are wanting to make a fresh start, or if you are heading out in a new direction.

What follows is a simple purification ritual that can be used on crystals and stones, and other sacred objects. This rite is best done at sunrise or during the day, on your altar (if you have one) or on any table that can be used for this purpose.

Fill a basin with pure water and place this to the west on the table or altar. Next, light a red candle and set this to the south. Light some incense and place this to the east. Finally, place a dish or flowerpot filled with freshly dug earth to the north on the altar. In between all these objects, set the stone (or stones) to be purified.

When all is readied, still your mind and pick up the stone in your projective (dominant) hand. Turn your attention toward the bowl of earth. Place the stone on it and cover with fresh earth. Say something to the effect of:

I purify you with earth!

Leave the stone there for a few minutes, all the while visualizing the earth absorbing the stone’s impurities. Then remove it, dust it clean, and hold it in the incense smoke. Pass it nine times through the smoke, from the right to the left, saying words like these:

I purify you with air!

Next, quickly pass the stone through the candle’s flame several times, saying:

I purify you with fire!

The fire burns away all negativity. Now place the stone in the water and say this or your own words:

I purify you with water!

Visualize the water washing it clean. Leave the stone in the water for a time, then dry it with a clean cloth and hold it in your receptive hand. Is the stone “clean”? If not, repeat this simple ritual as many times as necessary, until your are sure it has done it’s work. Afterward, store the stone in a special place. It is ready for use in magick.

Here is an exercise in being grounded and fully present in the body. This is important before and after any spellwork or magick.

Wherever you are in this moment, as you continue to read and pay attention to the words on the screen, become aware of your feet. If they aren’t on the ground, put them there and feel the earth beneath you. Notice how you automatically experience the motion of your breath, the tension in your shoulders, the hunger in your belly. When awareness is grounded, we become aware of what is going on in our bodies in the space between our heads and our feet.

Take a walk and keep shifting your awareness back to your feet. Remember to make this shift throughout the day; while you’re standing in line for the cashier at the supermarket or at the bank, or waiting for a red light to turn green, or scrambling eggs. Find your feet.

We all suffer from stress at one time or another, and in a workplace it is often difficult to reverse the situation. This spell can be taken to your workplace or used in other stressful situations, with minimum disturbance. For healing and magic, the earth, or Mother Earth, from whence all things spring, is unsurpassed. Add a little Borage, the flower of courage, and some of your own essence, and even the most difficult of predicaments can be overcome.

Here is a Mediterranean spell to charge you with the strength to overcome a stressful situation. The items you will need are as follows:

  • A handmade cloth bag
  • Some dry earth
  • A small bunch of Borage flowers

Instructions:

Make a small bag. It can be very plain and simple, but it is important that you stitch it together by hand, so that you are putting your self-essence into it. The bag needs to be large enough for you to get both hands inside, with a drawstring to secure it. As a special touch, embroider your initials on it in your favorite color.

On a bright, sunny day collect a few handfuls of dry earth and some borage flowers. Feel the sun’s rays warming your body and the flowers and the soil in your hands, and store the memory carefully.

Dry the Borage flowers, then place them with the earth in your bag. pull the drawstring to secure them. keep the bag in an accessible place. When things are going badly or you need a pick-me-up, it will only take a few moments to place your hands in the bag, touch the dried Borage flowers, reflect on your stored memories, and let Mother Earth work her magic.

Perform this spell during an eclipse or a waxing moon phase. Arrange sea shells on a secluded beach, in the shape of a circle. If you do not have access to a beach, perform this ritual in a garden or forest using stones, branches or flowers to form the circle.

Kneel at the center facing the ocean. Light a blue candle and incense of your choice. Raise arms high and recite:

“With smoke and flame this spell’s begun.
O Goddess of the stars, moon, and the sun,
Let the healing power begin.
Let the Earth be whole again.”

“The Earth is my mother and I am her child.
The earth is my lover, free and wild.
Heal on the outside, heal within.
Land and sea, fire and wind.”

“With love sincere,
I chant this prayer to make mankind
Begin to care.
Let every sister and every brother
Heal the wounds of the Great Earth Mother.”

“Let the healing power begin,
Let the Earth be whole again.
Heal on the outside, heal within.
Land and sea, fire and wind.
So mote it be!”

GnomeAccording to the 16th century Swiss alchemist Paracelsus, the gnome is able to move through earth in the same manner that a fish swims through water or a human walks through air. Gnomes are associated with the fey, or fairy-folk, and are equated with earthly treasures, earth consciousness, and great knowledge of the magick in rocks, caves, roots, gems, and mountains.

Because gnomes can move through earth like fish swim through water, one can turn to the gnomes to move a block of earth energy within oneself, or a block placed in our path by another.

This spell is particularly good when things have been moving along just fine for you, you’ve been recovering from your debts, sailing ahead and suddenly – thwack! You run into some sort of a block. Before you spend days, weeks, or months worrying, try this spell.

Supplies:

  • 1 cup dirt
  • A sieve
  • A handful (up to 1/2 oz) of ginger or dragon’s blood herb

Instructions:

Over a paper towel or bowl, pour the cup of dirt into the sieve. Add the ginger (or dragon’s blood)

Say:

Element of earth,
move the mountain of ___________ (state what is stuck)

As the ginger (or dragon’s blood) mixes with the earth,
so shall the blocks in my life
be broken gently apart and removed,
so that I may prosper.

As the dirt shakes out of the sieve, visualize the financial problems in your life breaking up and dissolving. Once all the dirt is through the sieve, turn the sieve over and tap it seven times to remove any excess dirt.

Carry the dirt to a crossroads at midnight and dump it there, once again asking the element of earth to gently disperse the negativity in your life with harm to none.

Wash the sieve, asking the element of water to gently cleanse your situation.

Pirates-Buried-With-Their-Treasures

Account of an Experienced Fortune Hunter, How Treasures Beneath the Earth Rise and Fall.

If one is contemplating to dig up a treasure, he should above all other things know, whenever the treasure stands highest to rise with the sun and return again with the sinking of the same. If the treasure happens to be hidden in an open field, the affair will soon be righted by digging around, crosswise, or undermining, so that the treasure can be reached from below, but one must not be tardy in constructing the posts or galleries in order to prop the treasure in time, because the digger might otherwise be buried underneath the falling heap. But, if it can be so conducted that the sun can shine crosswise under the treasure, it may be raised, since the goblins of the earth have no longer the power to remove the same.

the-zen-of-barefoot-walking

This exercise expands your experience beyond the realm of personal energy and into the feelings of Earth energy. Our ancestors slept on the Earth and exchanged energy with it every day. Most people barely touch the Earth now, with the ubiquity of shoes and floors. Earth walking helps us come back into balance with the energy field of the Earth. Earth walking is a simple meditative walk outside.

Start in some natural setting, on grass, in a field or park, on the beach, or in the woods, rather than on concrete or asphalt. If you feel comfortable enough to do this barefoot, so much the better, but with practice, you will feel this experience through your shoes. Walk slowly and meditatively. Be aware of the Earth below your feet. Be aware of your personal energy, the auric field around you, touching the land, where your energy mingles. As you inhale, imagine that you are not only breathing in through your mouth, but breathing in through your feet.

My yoga teacher tells me that a wise man breathes through the sole of his feet. I think that applies to a wise witch, too. Imagine drawing in life force, Earth energy, through your feet as you walk. This energy grounds and centers you. It bolsters your metabolism and energy level, creating health and joy in the moment. For now, don’t worry about doing anything special while exhaling. Breathe normally. The excess energy will be released naturally through your daily activity. We release energy all the time. Focus on the connection you make to the Earth.

When on these walks, look for a quiet place that could serve as a meditation spot for later exercises. When you feel you are done with this experience, walk and breathe normally and resume your day-to-day activities. If you feel too energized, too charged, get on your hands and knees, placing your palms on the ground. Imagine the excess energy flowing out of your palms and even pouring out of your head. You release only the excess energy to the Earth, grounding yourself. As you release this energy, you can place the intent that such energy be used for healing the planet. This is a basic method of grounding yourself if you are not releasing excess energy.

The greatest lesson to learn about working with these energies is that all energies and powers are fundamentally neutral, meaning they are not good or evil. At times we can pick up on the energy of a place or person and feel it is “bad” energy, but it is only energy being used for a less than good intention. Intention rules everything. Electricity is electricity; it can be used to power a light build, a life-support machine or an electric chair. The energy itself does not judge its use, so people who use the energy must take responsibility. Personal, Earth, Sky, and Divine energies can be used to heal or to harm, depending on the intention behind the action.
