Runes are an ancient alphabet that has been dated as far back as 8000 BCE. Although the Latin alphabet may be more efficient and practical for writing, the Runes convey much more than simple sounds and vowels; they are powerful symbols which carry great magical properties. According to Norse Mythology, Runes were gifts from the gods themselves. They radiate mana, magickal power, and can be used to deliver a blessing or a curse.

Here’s how:

Choose the Rune that best represents – and transmits – your desire.  Write that Rune onto a slip of paper. The qualities and powers of each Rune can be explored in the following posts:

Maneuver it so that the target of your spell thinks that he or she dropped this paper, or else place it within other papers that the target then picks up. The target has to accept the Rune willingly, even if they are unaware of it.

When the target takes up the Rune paper, especially if it is then placed in his or her pocket, he or she is effectively accepting the Rune – curse or blessing – whatever the case may be.

This is an especially nice way to gift someone with magick on special occasions, such as birthdays, graduations, weddings, or anniversaries.

Stand before your altar. Relax, and begin.

Feel the earth below you, the firm ground. Experience the earth as upholding you, as maintaining your weight. Feel the earth holding you, rather than you pushing against the earth.

Earth Mother, I stand upon you today and recognize that we begin with you and we will end with you. Uphold me now as I give praise, and support me as I receive blessing.

A child of the earth, I come before the Gods, the Spirits of Nature, and the Ancestors to offer praise. I seek to establish ties, to offer to them and open to them in return.

The waters support and surround me.
The land extends about me.
The sky stretches out above me.
At the center burns a living flame.
I call out to the Keeper of the Gates.
Though I walk on uncertain paths,
Though I travel on unmapped ground,
Guide me, ward me, and relay my voice
As I offer prayers and praise.

In your mind’s eye, see the sacred center open before you: watch the mists part, see the door to the Otherworld open, or watch the spiral of the magic from between the worlds reveal the Otherworld. The Gates are now open, and the true work can begin.

I call out to my ancestors, those who came before me, you of my blood and you of my heart. I seek to give you praise, to remember you now, and to honour you.

Think on your ancestors: see their faces, smile with joy at their presence. If you have praise to give them, do so now.

I call out to the spirits of this place, the spirits of nature who are the soul of this land. I seek to give you praise, to call out to you now, and to honour you.

Think on the nature spirits: the faeries of the wood, the spirits of the land. If you have praise to give them, do so now.

I call out to the deities, first children, eldest and wisest. It is you to whom we look for guidance, and you who grant the greatest blessings. I seek to give you praise, to honour you now, to give you due worship.

Think on the deities: the great ones who bless our lives, who watch over us and show us that unconditional love. If you have praise to give them, do so now.

Optional: If you have a patron deity, one that you might wish to offer to specifically, now is the time to do that. If not, simply move to the next portion.

Today, I have given of my praise and myself.
With love in my heart and devotion on my tongue
I call out now, with all my soul:
Accept these offerings!

Take a moment to visualize, as you shout this last statement, all of your blessings, praise, and intent flowing up to the gods, out to the spirits of nature, and down to the ancestors. Hold yourself in that moment, watching your praises flow from you, and prepare yourself for what may be offered in return.

Now, take your divination tool up. If you don’t have one, you can use an athame, feather, wand, or even your hand.

As I have given to the Powers, I open to them. If there are blessings to be had, what might the nature of those blessings be?

Draw three symbols: one for the Ancestors, one for the Nature Spirits, and one for the Deities. Examine each one, think about the omen offered, and consider how it might translate into blessings.

Now, take these omens and concentrate on them, holding forth a cup of water or other beverage, saying:

Indeed, the Powers offer me blessings. Now I seek the manifestation of those blessings, the outpouring from the Powers that offer them. To those who enter this exchange, pour forth your blessings into my cup!

Envision the blessings before you, either as a mist, or a vortex of energy, or as pictographic representations of individual blessings. Watch them pour into the cup, mixing and infusing with the liquid already inside.

This in my hands is a holy cup of magic, the great blessings offered to me as joyful return of my praises to the Kindreds. Here are the deep waters that flow within the earth and that rain from the sky. These are the waters of life!

I accept this blessing, and I drink it with love and knowledge of the Powers!

(drink)

Now, with joy in my heart, I give thanks: To the Deities, thank you for your blessings. To the Nature Spirits, thank you for your blessings. To the Ancestors, thank you for your blessings. To all those Powers who have aided me, thank you for your blessings.

[If you made an offering to a patron above, make sure you thank him or her first: thank in the reverse order from invitation.]

To the Keeper of the Gates
For guiding me and warding me
Thank you for your protection.

In your mind’s eye, see the sacred center close before you: watch the mists gather, see the door to the Otherworld close, or watch the spiral of the magic from between the worlds close in on the Otherworld. The Gates are now closed, and this rite is ending.

Mother of all, to you I will return all things I have left unused. For supporting and upholding me in this rite, I thank you!

This rite is ended!

I came across a very ancient galdor spell. (A galdor spell is one which uses the sound of certain Viking Runes as an incantation.) Traces of its use can be found in many cultures. It is generally used against one who has wronged the wizard who pronounces the curse. Make sure you read the whole thing before you try it. Be aware that use by novices is not recommended.

  • Note: The runes used in the curse are shown next to the curse itself.

Here it is:

This spell requireth ye hand gesture to be made in ye following way. Extend thy power hand outward toward thy intended target with thy palm facing thy face. Fold thy thumb, first, third, and small fingers into thy palm. If this be done properly, then ye finger of death and damnation shall be extended towards the heavens.

Whilst making the sign of malediction indicated above, intone the following incantation in a great and wrathful voice:

YYYYYUUUUUUUUU

EEEEEESSSSSSSS

OOOOOHHHHHHHH

BBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEE

This being done, the wrongdoer’s fate is sealed. Great care must be taken with this most potent curse. It has been known in some instances for angry howling demons to take control of the intended target, causing great bodily harm to the unfortunate wizard.

You will need:

  • 1 wine glass of water
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 red candle
  • 1 light blue candle
  • 1 red rose (no scars or imperfections for best results)
  • 1 round hand-held mirror

Drop the pinch of salt into the glass of water saying:

“Beauty be within me.
Beauty now set me free.”

Carve the symbol of sex into the red candle. Carve a mirror symbol into the light blue one. Light the two candles, first the light blue one and then the red. Lay the mirror between the two candles and scry into your reflection. Drop the rose petals one by one onto the mirror. After this is done, drink the water and say:

“Beauty, beauty come to me.
Beauty, beauty set me free.”

Let the candles burn down all the way.

Fairies and clovers are connected in lore and legend. For this spell, you will first need to find a four leafed clover. This is not always simple to do, and part of the reason the fairies will bless you with their presence is that you put forth quite a bit of effort in the search.

Once you have found the four leafed clover, lay seven grains of wheat over it. Concentrate on your desire to see or communicate with the fairy realm. If luck is with you, the fairies will appear or speak to you.

The three leafed clover is often used in rituals designed to protect or to keep one looking youthful and fair. This spell is best performed on May 1st, but I do believe that it can also be done on any Spring morning.

To keep looking young, gather dew on May Day morning, just before the Sun rises. Put into  this water three clover stalks. Let these steep all day out of the Sun’s rays. The next morning, again before the sun rises, rub a little of the water on your face. Do this every morning until the water is used up. Cover the bowl with a cloth to keep the water clean and store in a place where it will remain untouched until the following morning.

Four leaf clovers allegedly possess magickal healing powers. If you can’t find one, create one. This spell is especially beneficial if one person does it for another.

Find a four leaf clover, or cut a four leaf clover shape from paper or a sheet of copper or tin. Empower it with blessings of healing, and then hang it near the patient or within their line of sight to magickally ease pain, bring joy, stimulate healing, and speed recovery.

Here is a great spell for good luck and for having your wishes come true:

Gather together:

  • 4 red candles
  • 4 green candles
  • Cinnamon
  • Glass of wine
  • Edible seeds or nuts
  • Round pebble

The red candles are for luck and the green for prosperity, but you may wish to substitute other colors more suitable to your specific wish. The seeds hold the promise of regrowth.

Here’s what to do:

Alternating the colors of the candles, make a large circle with them, aligning them to the eight compass directions. Put the glass of wine in the center of the circle, and place the dish of seeds and/or nuts next to it. Keep the pebble in your left hand through out the spell. The pebble represents the turning Circle of Life in the universe.

Sprinkle Cinnamon around the circle in a clockwise direction, then light the north candle. Once that candle is lit, enter the circle take your place at the center. Now, take a seed or nut, dip it in the wine, make your wish, and then eat it. Savor the flavor, the texture, enjoy the moment.

Working your way around the circle in a clockwise direction, light each candle. As you light each candle, take a seed or nut and dip it in the wine, make your wish and eat it, being sure to take the time to enjoy it. Do this until all the candles are lit.

When finished sit in the middle of your glowing circle. Drink the rest of the wine as a toast to the world. Once you have thoroughly enjoyed the moment, snuff the candles, toss a handful of seeds outside for the birds, and keep the pebble for good luck.

For an extra boost of power, do this spell when the moon is waxing.

  • Cut an apple in half horizontally, so that the star in the center is exposed.
  • Rub one half of the apple with a mint leaf while visualizing what needs to be banished.
  • Write your problem on a slip of paper.
  • Dip the paper into essential oil of mint and place it between the apple halves.
  • Put the two halves of the apple back together again with a skewer…so they remain joined.
  • Tie the pieces securely together with black silk or satin ribbon.
  • Bury the apple. Your problem will dissipate as the apple rots…

Take a small blue container and pour some water into it, preferably mineral water or spring water – but any will do. Then put some salt in it and leave it in a warm place near (or on) a windowsill.

As you pour the salt into the water, imagine it (the salt) evaporating the water into clouds. Then visualize the clouds lifting, thinning, and drifting away – leaving clear skies and bright sunshine.

Now leave the container of salt water to evaporate. Do not remove it until all the water has gone. When the container is dry, say thank you to the sun and enjoy the sunny weather coming your way.
