Fairies
If you’d like to see fairies, or at least feel a greater connection with them, try saying this prayer while outdoors. It’s especially powerful to say it, mentally or aloud, while you’re in an area where wildflowers grow.
You’ll know that you’ve successfully made the connection with the fairies when you feel compelled to pick up litter in the outdoors. This is one of the first communications that fairies normally make with humans. If you pick up litter, and treat animals and the environment with great respect, the fairies will show their appreciation by granting you wishes.
The Prayer:
Beloved Dana, goddess of the leprechauns; beautiful Diana, mistress of the wood nymphs; powerful Maeve, queen of the fairies; golden Oonagh, protector of the fairies; I ask your assistance in connecting with the elemental world.
Please introduce me to the fairies, and ask them on my behalf how I can get to know them better. I would like to develop a connection to the fairies and elementals, and I ask that you show me the way. Please help my mind and spiritual vision to open to communications from their magical realm. Thank you.

In many cultures, it is considered bad luck to compliment a baby or to remark about a child’s beauty as bad fairies might take notice. Flattery and envy attracts the evil eye, so wise mothers and crones will speak in reverse, ironically commenting: “How ugly that child is!” Or: “I’m sorry, Mrs. Duffy. Your baby is hideous!”
If a stranger has the bad manners to offer a compliment, or a fixed adoring gaze on a babe, the mother can deflect it by asking the person to spit on the child. Returning home, mothers can also perform a simple charm to protect her family by spitting on the children upon entering the house. If she forgets, the grandmother can do it.
Fairies and clovers are connected in lore and legend. For this spell, you will first need to find a four leafed clover. This is not always simple to do, and part of the reason the fairies will bless you with their presence is that you put forth quite a bit of effort in the search.
Once you have found the four leafed clover, lay seven grains of wheat over it. Concentrate on your desire to see or communicate with the fairy realm. If luck is with you, the fairies will appear or speak to you.

Whatever you do to bring life to your garden will bring faeries as well. First of all, plant plants that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This will also attract the fae. So put up hummingbird feeders, bird feeders, bird baths, bird houses, even bat houses. Small fountains, ponds, faery statues, or waterfalls are all good.
Here’s a short list of plants that attract faeries to your garden:
- Common yarrow, Achillea millefolium
- New York aster, Aster novi-belgii
- Shasta daisy, Chrysanthemum maximum
- Western giant hyssop or horsemint, Agastache occidentalis
- French lavender, Lavendula dentata
- Rosemary, Rosemarinus officinalis
- Thyme, Thymus
- Fountain butterfly bush, Buddleia alternifolia
- Orange-eye butterfly bush, summer lilac, Buddleia davidii
- Shrubby cinquefoil, Potentilla fruitiosa
- Common garden petunia, Petunia hybrida
- Verbenas, vervains, Verbena
- Pincushion flowers, Scabiosa caucasica
- Cosmos, Cosmos bipinnatus
- Common zinnia, Zinnia elegans
They also love the following plants and trees:
Foxglove, primrose, ragwort, cowslips, pansies, bluebells, clover (3-leaf, not 4-leaf), St. John’s wort, hazel, rowan, blackthorn, oak, willow, elder, birch, alder, apple, ash, and especially toadstools.
Dedicating the Faery Garden
Once the garden is started, you might want to ritually dedicate it as a Faery garden sanctuary. Begin by walking the around the garden with an athame (wand) pointed at its boundaries (much like casting a circle). Then sprinkle the perimeter of the garden with a branch of fir dipped in salted spring water. Finally, walk the boundaries of the garden with a lighted incense stick. (It can be left to burn in the ground when you finish.) Then with a wand of hazel, slowly walk around the garden greeting each plant with words like:
Spirits of the (insert plant name),
I welcome your presence in the garden.
Feel your love flow from your heart, down your wand, and out the end of the wand. Be sure to welcome all plants, stones, and trees. Nature spirits are easily offended. Conclude your ritual with these words:
In the name of the Goddess and the God,
I declare this garden a sanctuary
For the spirits of nature
And the children of the Gods.
When you are finished, leave a gift — cookies, soda, ale, cream, or bright, shiny things like rings, beads, or stones.

On the night of the full moon, go into your garden, pour a libation of fresh spring water, and say:
Plants of wonder plants of power
Increase in potency by minute and hour
I conjure you now, I charge you with strength
I give you life of infinite length
And boundless magical energy
As I will it, plants, charged you be.
Don’t forget to bless your garden spirits as well. Leave some fragrant herbs strewn in the garden, or string some silver bells, and say the following:
All members of the Sprite and Fey
I offer myself to you this day
For spiritual harvest and your work here below
So that I may flower and blossom and grow
And learn of myself and that up ahead
While working or playing or dreaming in bed
And in return, there is nothing I ask
But that within your magic spirit can bask

Here’s a great spell for May Eve, Beltane, or anytime you wish to summon faery folk.
~You will need powdered ginger and a small spoon. Set out candles at the compass directions: yellow in the east, red in the south, blue in the west, green in the north. Place a crystal or other stone beside each candle. Stand in the center of the room and send out thoughts of welcome. Chant the following:
“O spirits of plants and earth and trees, O little ones of every form, show yourselves to me, I ask, if you please. I mean no harm. Gaurdian spirits, watchers fair, our lives are joined. All things we share. Join me in friendship now, and kindness, and love.”
~ Go to the east. Light the candle. Sprinkle a little ginger by the candle, and say: “Nature spirits, faeries, dryads, and sylphs. Please hear my call. Good spirits enter this circle I made. Good spirits only, and kindness to all.”
~ Go to the south. Light the candle. Sprinkle ginger, and say: ” Star beings and devas, little beings of light, Please hear my call. Good spirits enter this circle I made. Good spirits only, and kindness to all.”
~ Go to the west. Light the candle. Sprinkle ginger, and say: “Water sprites, nymphs, naiads and undines. Please hear my call. Good spirits enter this circle I made. Good spirits only, and kindness to to all.”
~ Finish by going to the north. Light the candle. Sprinkle ginger and say: ” Little ones of the moonbeams, Please hear my call. Good spirits enter this circle I made. Good spirits only, and kindness to all.”
Sit quietly for a time, thinking about the fairy folk, be aware of their featherlight touches your body. Listen for their musical voices in your mind. Talk to them if you wish. When communication is finished, stand in the center of the circle. Raise your arms high, saying:
” All thanks and blessings be, To those of air, earth, sky, and sea. Go in peace. And all shall be well.”
Blow out the candles starting in the south and go counterclockwiseor widdershins.

In a woodland clearing, spread a clean green cloth. On it place small cakes and flowers, especially primroses, in a circle. Imagine the magic around you and say:
O Fairy Queen,
Upon your white steed,
Within me plant
A magic seed.
From you may spring
Many new beginnings.
Great Queen,
Accept these offerings.
Leave the items and walk around the altar three times, then slowly walk the path back to your home. Listen for the sound of laughter and bells and know you are blessed.

An eclipse can be an excellent time to make contact with the Faerie realm. Here is a great how-to that I found at Ancient Magical Recipes:
To initiate contact with the Faeries during the eclipse go out in a place which feels familiar and alive. By that I mean a place in Nature that you love either because you felt close with the Fae or because you have really good memories of that place (for example having a good time) or just because that place feels like home. If you don’t feel that there is a specific place in mind then it is better to stay home and meditate about your connection with the Fairies. I am perfectly sure that if you truly want to contact the Fairies your time will come.
When you arrive at your favorite place make sure you bring an offering. Any offering that you feel that would be appropriate. From my experience sugar, honey, ribbons, wine, milk and fresh fruit are well accepted.
Now find a place that feels “right” as with the fairies you must always embrace your intuition. Close your eyes and breathe, breathe slowly and deeply, feel your surroundings, feel the life force in the wind, the trees, the grass, the stones, the water, the ground, the flowers, the animals. Then extend your mind to those beings that protect this place that surround everything: the guardians, protectors, allies of the Forest, the light that penetrates the darkness, the life that accompanies and embraces all life and there you are. Part of the circle, part of life, there breathing deeply and slowly, alive!
Now proclaim:
My name is (name or magical name) and I am your ally
Love brought me here, love is all I feel, love will be with me when I leave with my heart clear
Fairies of the Forest hear me well and hear me dear:
The door is open
I feel no fear
Me and you we are kith and kin
Be with me and guide me
That’s all I seek
And as I claim so be it!
