Banishing Spells

One of the most basic and useful ceremonial rituals of magick is called the banishing ritual, or lesser ritual of the pentagram. A pentagram (or pentacle) is a five-pointed star with the point up.

The banishing ritual is helpful in psychic protection and healing since it forms a protective barrier against malevolent forces. The psychic barrier it creates can be made to permit entry of desired (constructive) forces and the exclusion of negative ones. Thus, the banishing ritual is an essential first step in almost any formal full magick ceremony.

The ritual requires that you use a magical implement or “weapon”, such as a ceremonial knife, wand, or simply point your index finger, to “draw” the pentagram in the air at each of the cardinal points (four directions). Also, you will be chanting (‘vibrating’) some Hebrew names of God.

Holding your magical weapon and facing east, extend your arm out straight in front of you. In this ritual you will use the full sweep of your arm to draw the pentagram in the air. Follow the description below by beginning at the lower left and sweeping your magical weapon up toward the right, etc. as shown. Do not bend your arm at the wrist or elbow. While you do this, visualize the lines and eventually the star as vibrant white, floating in the space before you. You are projecting energy to do this, and the result will be a gleaming 5-pointed star floating in the east; visualize this as vividly as you can.

Now energize it further by piercing the center of it with your magical weapon and vibrating (speaking slowly in a slightly lower than normal pitch, remember) “Yod-He-Vau-He”.

Then turn slowly to the next cardinal point in sequence, and as you do so, with your arm still extended in front of you, visualize a white line connecting around to the cardinal point. Trace a similar pentagram with the appropriate words and following the same procedure:

  • South — Adonai Tzaboath
  • West — Eh-Ei-He
  • North — Agla.

Now complete the white line drawn back to the center of the eastern pentagram. Note that the cardinal points must be followed in a clockwise order, and the pentagram must be drawn in the manner illustrated; to do otherwise would change the function of the ritual. The result of all this should be a large bright white pentagram visualized hanging in mid-air at each of the four directions, all tied together by a bright white line. You could now, for example, visualize the pentagrams moving out to the circumference of your home, thereby protecting all within.

There is also a somewhat simplified version of this ritual in which the pentagram is traced only once overhead and then is energized with one of the four names, such as “Eh-Ei-He”. Oftentimes the simplified version is sufficient, but naturally the effect of the full version is more complete.

One of the primary uses of this ritual is to ward off psychic attack — that is, when another is (consciously or unconsciously) attempting to harm you, cause sickness, accidents, bad dreams, emotional upset, or to force you to do something against your will. Fortunately this doesn’t happen very often. The world of the magician is fairly safe for the pure of heart. Psychic attack usually depends upon vulnerabilities. If you are not vulnerable you are safe. Thus unification with the true will is the greatest protection possible. And the use of the banishing ritual is never hurtful. You can even use it to hold off negative aspects of yourself.

  • Time: Sunset on a Waning Moon
  • Tools: yellow candle with holder, rose petals, lavender oil, small garnets, carnelian or turquoise stone, small jar with lid or plastic bag that seals, and a picture of yourself healthy.

Charge yellow candle with desired goal and place in holder . As you light the candle, visualize yourself passing on second helpings of food, putting only small portions on your plate and looking healthy and physically fit.

Charge rose petals, oil and stones. Sprinkle petals around candle, again visualize your goal. Place the charged garnet stones and a few drops of oil into the jar or bag. As you do this visualize again.

Then pick up the petals and place them into the jar or bag also. Seal the jar or bag and say:

“By this jar/bag of powered oil,
petals and stones,
it will bring me courage and help me
meet my goal to not eat or snack
as much and become healthier.”

Visualize yourself becoming healthier and moving the weight on the scale to the left. Carry this jar or bag with you and sniff charged items before eating.

Rub the charged carnelian or turquoise on the picture of yourself then rub onto your body while visualizing yourself become the you in the picture. Say:

“In no way will this spell cause me to suffer any adverse effects.
So mote it be!”

Carry the stone with you and rub it when you have the urge to snack or eat too much. Hang the picture up in your kitchen to view. Allow the candle to burn for another hour then snuff it out and put it away. Burn it whenever you need the moral support.

Jelly beans can be used in the following house clearing ritual:

Begin by placing a small pile of jelly beans in a large bowl close to the front door, but cover the top of it with a lid, a plate, or something similar. Now, clean the house. Sweep, dust, vacuum, and put away the clutter. As you do this, call and invite all the little gremlins, goblins, ghosts, and disruptive spirits to come to the feast you have planned for them. It might go something like this:

Come one come all…
I have a nice sweet feast planned just for you…
soon it will begin… come and see…

As soon as the house is cleaned, take the lid off the bowl of jelly beans, and call all the little disruptive spirits to a sweet feast. As you call them, tell them to hurry up. Give them a minute or two to come to the bowl, and then encourage them to jump in.

Jump in jump in It’s a nice sweet treat…
jump in jump in before another gets your seat.

Visualize all the little spirits jumping into the bowl. When you have a sense that they’re all in. Pop the lid on and rush outside with the bowl of beans.. Now, you can run with it as far away from the house as is practical, or you can take them for a “fun little ride.”

If you opt for the ride, be very careful to have the bowl of jelly beans completely sealed so one can get out and infect your vehicle.

The best place to take the jellybeans and collected spirits, is a crossroads or graveyard. If that is the case, you can simply pour them out and take your leave. They will be happy there. If you leave them somewhere that they might make problems for others, you can encircle the pile of jelly beans with a thin line of salt and cayenne pepper to contain them.

When the ritual is finished, quickly go back to your house. Seal your front door with a thin line of salt. Right away, wash the bowl and the lid with warm soapy water.

Enjoy the cleared energy in your home!

On a waning moon, on any day of the week except Saturday, place an ice cube into a bowl next to a white candle. Place lavender in a natural vessel (such as a shell) and white carnations in a vase with water.

Say aloud:

With the help of the guardians,
Goddess and God,
I ask that my fear gently be lifted from me.
As the ice melts
so does my resistance,
and as the water turns to air
my fear opens to spaciousness.
I ask that this be done with ease
and for the greater good.
And I release this with love and trust
and say
so be it.
And so it is.

Let the bowl remain in place until all the water has evaporated. Allow the candle to burn as long as you like.

Items Needed:

  • 2 apples
  • a knife

Get an apple and cut it in half horizontally across the middle. Once you cut it you will see a five pointed star. Rub ½ of the apple over your face or the affected area. Now say:

“Apple, sacred fruit of the Goddess,
with this gift, I do caress the blemish that brought me shame,
I banish now this affliction in your name”

Now get the other apple and cut it vertically from top to bottom. Rub ½ of the apple over your face or affected area as well. Then say:

“I love and accept myself as I am today,
Clear skin I summon to come my way,
By my will – so mote it be,
Three times three times three”

Bury the first apple by a tree, bush or flower that is outside. Bury the second apple by water. If you can’t find a place with water, just bury it anywhere and pour water over it.

Here’s a simple Hoodoo War Water spell to rid yourself of an adversary:

  1. Write your adversary’s name and identifying information on a strip of brown paper.
  2. Place it in a jar and cover it with War Water.
  3. Seal it tight and hide it in a dark, secret place.
  4. Shake the jar periodically.

Once you have succeeded in ridding yourself of your adversary, pour the water and what’s left of the paper out at a crossroads far from your home. Be sure to throw the jar away.

You must take a white egg, and through small holes made in each end, blow forth the contents from the shell. Plug up one end with a little softened beeswax, then fill the shell, using a fine funnel, with sour red wine. Carefully seal the second hole with more wax, and in red ink write upon the surface of the shell the name of that plaguing compulsion you would be rid of.

Take this egg in secret to a place where great rocks cover the ground. Stand there and say these words:

“Hall of blood where life has fled
Walls of bone that close me round
I break thy reign, thy yolk I shed
I cast thy powers to the ground.”

Hurl the egg against a rock so that it shall burst into fragments and the contents be spilt upon the earth. Then gather up the broken bits of shell, take them home, and grind them into a powder in a mortar. This charmed dust should be kept within a small jar, a pinch of it to be placed on the tongue and swallowed whenever further treacherous temptations may appear.

Sometimes spirits attach themselves to an individual rather than merely haunting an area. The spirit may speak through the individual, refusing to leave. Encouraging or forcing them to leave is a shamanic technique. However, should you find yourself dealing with a case of possession without an exorcist in the neighborhood, the following spells may be attempted. In general, you will still need a ritual assistant to help achieve your magickal goals.

Here are some general guidelines:

  • Use intensive cleansing methods to purify the area.
  • In addition to whichever methods are employed ring bells, cymbals and sistra loudly.
  • Invoke benevolent protective spirits, like Archangel Michael, Kwan Yin, and/or Isis.
  • Draw up talismans of protection.
  • Summon the demons demanding that they come forward and depart.
  • Look for signs of departure.
  • Dramatic spirits will let you know they’ve gone. Otherwise use divination techniques to determine whether your methods have been effective or, if not, what further action should be taken.
  • If you’re sure they’ve departed, burn the talismans.
  • Mix a teaspoon of the ashes into cooled boiled spring water. Have the afflicted person drink it.
  • Close the ceremony.

In traditional Chinese belief, what we call demons may actually be a manifestation of excessive Yin energy. This can be neutralized by applying the opposing force: extremely potent yang energy. The following serve as demon/yin repellents:

  • Firecrackers
  • Mirrors
  • The crowing of a rooster
  • Swords

Reading sacred texts and philosophy books is also believed to send malevolent spirits on their merry way because these create order, in which demons (which crave chaos) cannot thrive.

It is also traditionally believed that low-level malevolent spirits can enter the body through food. This is the source of many fairy tales where evil is swallowed. Certain foods guard against this as well as expelling any previously swallowed demons. The most powerful include the following, and can be added to food to expel and also prevent demons:

  • Ginger
  • Garlic

No exorcist available? No friends to help rid you of an unwanted spirit? Do it yourself. Demons reputedly hate the scent of frankincense.

Instructions:

  1. Apply essential oil of frankincense to the crown of the head, the forehead, the back of the neck, the throat, chest, palms of hands and soles of feet. Use individual drops of undiluted essential oil for this purpose.
  2. Now add some essential oil of frankincense to freshly drawn water.
  3. Using a brand new white cloth, bathe all of the above body parts, as well as the genital area.
  4. Repeat Psalm 145 throughout the entire ritual.

We should educate people that ‘Witch’ is not evil but ancient and positive. The first time I called myself a ‘Witch’ was the most magical moment of my life.
