Protection Spells

Many harmful tricks (spells) are laid by throwing powders in a pathway, burying bottle spells for the victim to walk over, or lifting the victims foot track dirt and working with it in some way.

To shield yourself from anyone doing these things to you, sprinkle black pepper powder or a mixture of black pepper and “Fear Not To Walk Over Evil” powder in your shoes. It is said that your track will be magickally invisible or invulnerable to harm, and even if someone does throw for you or lift your foot track, they won’t be able to affect you in any way. If you keep a silver dime in your shoe, too, and check it every once in a while, you’ll know if someone is laying messes for you because the dime will turn black.

Blessings on this fine machine,
May it’s data all be clean.
Let the files stay where they’re put,
away from disk drives keep all soot.

From it’s screen shall come no whines,
let in no spikes on power lines.
As oaks were sacred to the druids,
let not the keyboard suffer fluids.

Disk full shall be no more than rarity,
the memory shall not miss it’s parity.
From the modem shall come wonders,
without line noise making blunders.

May it never catch a virus,
and all it’s software stay desirous.
Oh let the printer never jam,
and turn my output into spam.

I ask of Eris, noble queen,
keep Murphy far from this machine.

This Protective Blessing Ritual was held on Saint George’s Day (April 23 by the Julian calendar, or May 6 by Gregorian calendar) . In many communities, Saint George’s Day was the day animals were lead out into the field, thus protective, blessing rituals abound.

Here’s one:

Lead all healthy animals three times around the perimeter of their field, barn or home, always in a sunwise direction. The person leading the parade carries a lit torch. The person bringing up the rear holds an open padlock in one hand, the key in the other hand. After the third round, the animals are lead back into the barn.
Turn the key in the lock. Throw the key into a river or stream, while preserving the now permanently locked padlock.

This blessing spell for livestock is meant to be performed on St George’s day (April 23 by the Julian calendar, or May 6 by Gregorian calendar) .

Preserve a palm blessed on Palm Sunday (If this isn’t available or appropriate you may substitute a sacred protective plant, such as wormwood or rosemary.)

Place this before a sacred image, together with two whole raw eggs and a pot filled with raw barley.

Light candles before the image. (Some versions of this spell specify a church candle.) Use the flame from a candle to light a torch.

Group all the animals to be protected in a circle.

One person circles around the animals carrying the torch, while a second person sprinkles Holy Water, or another protective water formula onto the animals, using the palm frond, rosemary or wormwood plant.

The animals are then driven to pasture by slapping them with the palm frond, rosemary, or wormwood plant.

When this is complete, throw the palm frond plant into running water. Sow the barley in the ground, and break the eggs on the ground away from your property.

Pow-wow is a unique creole of Christian theology and a shamanistic belief system. It is still practiced in some rural areas of Pennsylvania. In spite of the name, it is not of Native American derivation. It is believed to have been brought over to America by German immigrants who practiced folk-magic.

This is a collection of protective charms collected from a book written by a Pennsylvania Dutch healer in the 1820s. Wherever you see the symbol + + +  it indicates that you would then make the sign of the cross three times.

Jesus, do thou render harmless all arms and weapons, like unto the husband of Mary the mother of God, he having been harmless likewise. Furthermore, do thou guard the three holy drops of blood which Christ sweated on the Mount of Olives. Jesus Christ! do thou protect me against being killed and against burning fires. Amen.

  • Different directions to effect the same

The Holy Trinity guard me, and be and remain with me on the water and upon the land, in the water or in the fields, in cities or villages, in the whole world wherever I am. The Lord Jesus Christ protect me against all my enemies, secret or public; and may the Eternal Godhead also guard me through the bitter sufferings of Jesus Christ; his holy rosy blood, shed on the cross, assist me, J. J. Jesus has been crucified, tortured and died.

These are true words, and in the same way must all words be efficacious which are here put down, and spoken in prayer by me. Fire-arms, hold your fire in the almighty hand of God. Thus all fire-arms shall be charmed. + + +

When the right hand of the Lord Jesus Christ was fastened to the tree, of the cross; like unto the Son of the Heavenly Father who was obedient unto death, may the Eternal Godhead protect me. by the rosy blood, by the five holy wounds on the tree of the cross; and thus must I be blessed and well protected like the cup and the wine, and the genuine true bread, which Jesus Christ gave to his disciples on the evening of Maunday Thursday. J. J. J.

  • Another similar direction

The grace of God and his benevolence he with me (N). I shall now ride or walk out; and I will gird about my loins with a sure ring. So it pleases God, the Heavenly Father, he will protect me, my flesh and blood, and all my arteries and during this day and night which I have before me; and however numerous my enemies may be, they must be dumbstruck, and all become like a dead man, white as snow, so that no one will be able to shout, cut or throw at me, or to overcome me, although he may hold rifle or steel against whomever else evil weapons and arms might be called, in his hand.

My rifle shall go off like lightening, and my sword shall cut as a razor. Then wen our dear lady Mary upon a very high mountain; she looked down into a very dusky valley and beheld her dear child standing amidst the Jews, harsh, very harsh, because he was bound so harsh, because he was bound so hard; and therefore may the dear Lord Jesus Christ save me from all that is injurious to me. + + + Amen.

  • Another similar direction

There walk out during this day and night, that thou mayest not let any of my enemies,, or thieves, approach me, if they do not intend to bring me what was spent from the holy altar. Because God the Lord Jews is ascended into heaven in his living body. O Lord, this is good for me this day and night. + + + Amen.

  • Another one like it

In the name of God I walk out. God the Father be with me, and God the Holy Ghost be by my side. Who ever is stronger than these three persons may approach my body and my life; yet whoso is not stronger than these three would much better let me be. J. J. J.

  • Another one like it

I conjure thee, sword, sabre or knife, that mightest injure or harm me, by the priest of all prayers, who had gone into the temple at Jerusalem, and said: An edged sword shall pierce your soul that you may not injure me, who am a child of God.

  • A very effective charm

I (name) conjure thee, sword or knife, as well as all other weapons, by that spear which pierced Jesus’ side, and opened it to the gushing out of blood and water, that he keep me from injury as one of the servants of God. + + + Amen.

  • A very safe and reliable charm

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with me [name]. Oh shot, stand still! in the name of the mighty prophets Agtion and Elias, and do not kill me! oh shot, stop short. I conjure you by heaven and earth, and by the last judgment, that you do no harm unto me, a child of God. + + +

  • A good charm against thieves

There are three lilies standing upon the grave of the Lord our God; the first one is the courage of God, the other is the blood of God, and the third one is the will of God. Stand still, thief! No more than Jesus Christ stepped down from the cross, no more shalt thou move from this spot; this I command thee by the four evangelists and elements of heaven, there in the river, or in the shot, or in the judgment, or in the sight. Thus I conjure you by the last judgment to stand still and not to move, until I see all the stars in heaven and the sun rises again. Thus I stop by running and jumping and command it in the name of + + +. Amen.

This must be repeated three times.

  • A well-tried charm

Three holy drops of blood have passed down the holy cheeks of the Lord God, and these three holy drops of blood are placed before the touchhole. As surely as our dear lady was pure from all men, as surely shall no fire or smoke pass out of this barrel. Barrel, do thou give neither fire, nor flame, nor heat. Now I will walk out, because the Lord God goeth before me; God the Son is with me, and God the Holy Ghost is about me forever.

  • Another well-tried charm against fire-arms

Blessed is the hour in which Jesus Christ was born; blessed is the hour in which Jesus Christ was born; blessed is the hour in which Jesus Christ was born; blessed is the hour in which Jesus Christ has arisen from the dead; blessed are these three hours over thy gun, that no shot or ball shall fly toward me, and neither my skin, nor my hair, nor my blood, nor my flesh be injured by them, and that no kind of weapon or metal shall do me any harm, so surely as the Mother of God shall not bring forth another son. + + +. Amen.

  • In conclusion

In conclusion the following morning prayer is given, which is to be spoken before entering upon a journey. It protects against all manner of bad luck.

Oh, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, yea, a King over the whole world, protect me [name] during this day and night, protect me at all times by thy five holy wounds, that I may not be seized and bound. The Holy Trinity guard me, that no gun, fire-arm, ball or lead, shall touch my body; and that they shall be weak like the tears and bloody sweat of Jesus Christ, in the name of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Amen.

From: Pow-Wows, or Long Lost Friend, by John George Hoffman, [1820]

From Pow-Wows, or Long Lost Friend, by John George Hoffman, [1820], we have a morning prayer to be spoken before starting on a journey, which will save the person from all mishaps.

I (here the name is to be pronounced) will go on a journey to-day; I will walk upon God’s way, and walk where God himself did walk, and our dear Lord Jesus Christ, and our dearest Virgin with her dear little babe, with her seven rings and her true things. Oh, thou! my dear Lord Jesus Christ, I am thine own, that no dog may bite me, no wolf bite me, and no murderer secretly approach me; save me, O my God, from sudden death! I am in God’s hands, and there I will bind myself. In God’s hands I am by our Lord Jesus’ five wounds, that any gun or other arms may not do me any more harm than the virginity of our Holy Virgin Mary was injured by the favor of her beloved Jesus. After this say three Lord’s prayers, the Ave Maria, and the articles of faith.

This spell is used to ensure that your travel will be safe and protected throughout the upcoming holiday season. First, cast your circle and place a map of the area you will be travelling upon your altar. On the map, trace the path you will be taking using a green pen.

When you have finished, retrace the route with a piece of white chalk. As you trace the route with chalk, visualize the white powder as a light of white protection keeping you safe upon your journey.

Next, place small amethyst crystals on the map, along the route you will take. These crystals need not be large and you can place them far enough apart where you don’t need many.

Say the following words:

“Bless our journey and keep us from harm
With light of protection and amethyst charm
Our path be straight and free from strife
Many more adventures left upon my life”

Imagine in your mind’s eye arriving safely at your destination while you take the map and fold it, making sure the crystals remain inside. Finally, wrap a white ribbon around it and tie it off. Keep this as a protection charm with you as you embark upon your journey.

From Simple Magick

Hecate rides a chariot drawn by dragons, symbolizing her dominion over the menstrual process. Other emblems include a broomstick, a flaming torch to light the way through dark passages, and a key that unlocks all doors, gates, and roads including the birth canal.

Petition Hecate for safe, smooth delivery prior to going into labor. In addition midwives may always request Hecate’s assistance, guidance, and protection. The same ritual spell serves laboring women and midwives alike.

  • Put thirteen separated but unpeeled garlic cloves on a plate.
  • Cover them with honey, lavender honey if at all possible. (You can also infuse plain honey with lavender blossoms.)
  • Leave this at a crossroads, preferably at midnight, but at least after dark, either on the final day of any month or during the Dark Moon Phase.
  • Murmur your prayers and petitions and go home, without looking back.

If you hear dogs or see them, especially black dogs or lone dogs unaccompanied by people, this is very auspicious (but should not be taken as an invitation to approach a strange dog, if caution suggests otherwise.) Hecate also sometimes manifests in the form of a black cat.

Note: This spell can be used for any project or idea that you are working to “birth” or “bring into the world.” Just be sure that it is something about which you care deeply.

In the most commonly used form of chants, each member of the group repeats the entire verse. However, the “Spinning Mantra” differs in that one member intones the first line of the chant, the next person, the second line, and so on. One note can be used throughout, with the same syllables stressed in each line.

Another variant is to start the Spinning Mantra off, and have the members of the group wander around, stopping briefly in front of each other to chant their lines. This can be very disorienting, but is very effective if performed with a large group.

Try it with this magick chant for power and protection:

“I call upon the Powerful, Cosmic Guardians.
I call upon the Ones who bring Power and Strength to those who believe.
I am a dynamic living Electro-Magnetic Force.
I am Positive.
I have a Strong Will.
I am Fearless – Absolutely fearless!
Nothing can Harm me.
I am the Master of my Destiny.
I Surround myself with a Mental Atmosphere of Protection.
No Harm can penetrate this Positive Armor.
Those would harm me shall be Powerless.
Their negative energy shall return to them a Thousandfold.
I am Strong.
I am safe.
I am Positive,
I am Powerful.
As I say
So shall it be.

This ritual combined with this chant can be very powerful. For best results each participant should have a copy of the chant and a chance to practice their lines. The idea is to repeat the chant over and over allowing the energy to build.

From: The Magical Use of Voice and various other sources

The evil eye is a popular belief that somebody can voluntarily or involuntarily bring disease and disgrace to another person by looking at them, usually brought on by envy. In some cultures, the belief is focused on children, where someone can inadvertently give a child the evil eye by complimenting them, as it draws in negative energy. If you think you or someone you know is suffering from the evil eye, you can use the methods below to help diagnose and cure it.

Diagnosing the Evil Eye

Before taking steps to cure the evil eye, one must first be assured that the evil eye is indeed the cause of the malady or the misfortune.

  • Notice the symptoms.

The negative energy of an envious person can cause physical symptoms that are not related to a disease, such as weakness, eye infections, upset stomach, fever and nausea. Also, it is likely that the affected person will have personal, family or professional problems without any apparent cause.

  • Follow the coal method.

This method is practiced in Eastern Europe. Simply drop a piece of charcoal into a pan of water. You can also use the head of a match that has burned. Sinking is a good sign, while floating means a person or child has been affected.

Usually a parent or healer performs these rituals, if the sufferer is a child. If not, the sufferer can perform them.

  • Try the wax method.

Another method is to drip hot wax into holy water. Watch how the wax reacts. If it splatters, it means you or the child you are testing for have the evil eye. The same is true if it sticks to the side. People in the Ukraine employ this method.

  • The oil method.

With this method, the person diagnosing the condition drops oil into water. If it forms an eye, the child is thought to have the evil eye. Another way is to pour oil over a lock of the affected person’s hair into a glass of water (preferably holy water). If the oil sinks, then the person has the evil eye.

Methods For Curing the Evil Eye

  • Try the touch method.

The easiest way to cure the evil eye, according to some, is to have the person who caused the evil eye touch the child. Since the evil eye is usually unintentional, the person should have no problem with simply touching the child. The child can be touched on the hand or forehead.

This belief is most prominent in Hispanic cultures. And the method is believed to work because evil eye is sometimes caused by a person complimenting a child without touching him or her. Having the person then touch the child resolves it.

  • Use an egg.

In Mexico and Latin countries, some parents use an egg. They pass the egg over the child’s body, commonly a prayer is said along with this such as the Our Father, and then put the egg in bowl beneath the pillow. They leave it there during the night and check to see if the white is foggy in the morning. If it is, the child was affected by the evil eye. This method also cures the evil eye at the same time.

We have a nice little post on one method of using the egg for cleansing. It can be found here: A Cleansing Ritual

  • Try hand gestures.

Some say that making certain gestures with your hand can ward off or cure the evil eye. One gesture is the mano cornuto, which is just a fist with the index and pinkie extended (horned hand). Point your hand down when making this gesture. Another is the mano fico, where you stick your thumb in between your index finger and middle finger (fig hand) in a fist.

Some Italians carry a little red horn (corna) around by wearing it or keeping it on a key chain. The horn is worn in place of making the horned hand sign.

  • Find a six-sided mirror.

One method said to cure the evil eye is the use of a mirror to reflect back bad energy. This method is used in China. You simply hang the mirror in a front window or on the front door.

Some people in India also use mirrors to cure or ward off evil eye. However, instead of placing it in the home, small mirrors are sewn into clothes or worn on the body.

  • Use a healer.

Folk healers often provide cures for the evil eye. If you don’t feel confident in healing the evil yourself, you can try a healer, who will perform the rituals for you.

Preventing the Evil Eye

Prevention is better than a cure, and there are a number of different ways to prevent being a victim of the evil eye. Here are just a few of them:

  • Use a pink coral bracelet. Some suggest that putting a pink coral bracelet on your child will help protect against the evil eye. Others suggest having the child wear a buckeye has the same effect.
  • Try a red string. In Jewish cultures, parents use a red string to fend off the evil eye. For instance, sometimes it’s tied around a crib bar or the stroller handle.
  • Have the baby wear a jet amulet. In some Hispanic cultures, babies wear an amulet made of black jet. Often, it’s shaped as a small fist. You may see it with red and black beads on a gold chain.
  • Use the spit method. When someone gives your child a compliment, you can try spitting over your left shoulder three times and then touching wood (or knocking your own head) three times. This method is most often used in Russia.
  • Scatter salt. One Sicilian method of protection is to scatter salt on the floor inside the front door or outside the house. The salt (with innumerable grains) is supposed to confuse evil-casters.
  • The urine method. Another method Sicilians use is the urine method, where everyone in the house pees in a bucket. Then the urine is spilled in front of the house. It’s similar to the practice of “marking your territory” used by animals predators the world over.
  • Try an eye charm. Many cultures use eye charms to protect against evil eye. You can wear one on a necklace, for instance, or use one as a key chains. In Turkey, these little charms are made out of blue glass, but other cultures make them out of other materials.
