Spell work first begins with your own moral responsibility when performing magick. When you perform any magick spell or enchantment, you must be honest with yourself and accept that you are doing it not only for the good of yourself, but also for everyone else.

“What goes around comes around,” according to the law of witchcraft, and ill intentions sent out may be visited upon you – usually threefold. So remember, never cast spells in a moment’s impulse, in anger, or to hurt or upset others. Each time you cast a spell, think about your motives. Are they with goodwill, with no intentions of hurting anyone else?

Everytime you work with the magickal world, accept that there are unseen powers that may be difficult to contact. This is why performing spells at certain times of year creates the right interface between you, the spell, and the magickal powers of the heavens.

As witches, we must respect the workings of the universe and its magick, and it may be that at times we simply didn’t quite get it right. Perhaps we just didn’t believe in the magick enough for it to work. Perhaps our timing was off. What you must never do is worry or dwell on spells that don’t work. Rather, move on, try again, and most of all find deep within yourself a real sense of belief. The next time, you will succeed.

When casting spells, you must truly believe in the magick of the universe. You must truly believe that what you are doing is going to work and that you’re going to make something beneficial happen. Once you have accepted this, you will be quickly on your way to creating spells that will help you to form your own destiny, just as you want it to be.

~Spells For A Magical Year

Magick circles are often used for more complex work because they protect you from a wide variety of unwanted energies, which can get in the way of your spell.

Magick circles are best done outside, because you are then drawing directly on the electromagnetic forces of the landscape. You can first practice this at home, but it puts you directly in touch with the magick in nature if you can do it outside. Choose a quiet place, perhaps your garden, in the countryside, in a par, or even on a beach.

Take a compass if you aren’t very good at working out which direction you are facing!

Facing east, stand upright, extend your right hand, and point your index finger to the ground. As you slowly pivot around, draw an imaginary circle around you on the ground in a clockwise direction until you arrive at the east again. As you draw the imaginary circle, repeat the following:

“I draw this magick circle for protection and to show I am at one with the heavens and the spirits of the four directions.”

Next, you have to call in the spirits.

With your right hand outstretched again, point your finger to the east and call in the spirit of the east. Say:

“I call you, spirit of the East, to help me be touched with inspiration and innovative ideas.”

Repeat this charm in each of the other three directions, doing so in a clockwise direction, and calling on the individual attributes of each direction.

  • East – Inspiration/Innovation
  • South – Passion/Growth
  • West – Introspection/Inner Work
  • North – Protection/Permanence

Note: You can use whatever words you choose to call in the directional energies, just be sure to do them in order in a clockwise direction.

Now that you have called in the spirits, stand quietly for a moment in the center of your magick circle and quietly prepare yourself for the next stage of whatever spell you are working with.

When the spell is complete, open the circle by thanking each one of the directional energies, Often, this is done in a counter-clockwise manner beginning with the North and then working around to end in the East.

Declare the circle to be open. A nice way to close a circle is with the following chant:

The circle is open
But unbroken
May the peace of the Goddess
Be ever in your heart.
Merry meet and merry part.
And Merry meet again.

~Spells For A Magical Year

This simple spell is best performed at the beginning of the New Year or just after Yule, the first day of Spring, on your birthday, or any other date that represents a new beginning for you.

Gather together a long tinsel garland and some small candles. Using the garland, create a large spiral on the floor and surround it with the candles.

Walk the spiral as you would a labyrinth. Pause at the entrance to visualize what you wish for the New Year. Begin your walk at a pace that feels right, repeating the incantation:

“With each step I take,
with each breath I create,
let my spirit awake
for this wish I make.”

Once you reach the center, verbalize your wish. Retrace your steps out of the spiral, repeating the incantation again.

Notes:

  • Your spiral can be made from any materials you wish to use, such as flowers, shells, stones, leaves… etc.
  • If this is included in a group ritual, create a grouping of three spirals like those found at Newgrange in Ireland.

The first day of the new year is always a time to make promises or resolve to make the year a positive and prosperous one. With the help of the Roman God of new beginnings, Janus, and the Goddess Diana’s influence, you can step into the New Year with viable resolutions for the year ahead.

Diana was worshiped in the countryside, and gifts and offerings of fruit were left in forests or at crossroads. To invoke the power of Janus, salt and cakes were placed on a sacred altar. For this spell you’re going to combine the ingredients necessary into one special enchantment.

What you will need:

A handful of earth taken from each of the following places and gathered in a paper bag. (If you can’t get to any of these places, then three handfuls of earth from your own or a friend’s garden will also work.)

  • A crossroads
  • A forest, woods, or park
  • Beside a river, stream, or lake

You will also need the following:

  • 3 cupcakes
  • A tiny cup of sea salt
  • 2 white candles

The Spell:

Place the bag of earth in the corner of your altar to invoke the power of Diana’s abundance. Then place the three cupcakes in front of the bag, and lastly the tiny cup of salt at the front.

Now light the two candles to invoke your deities, and as you place them on either side of your offering, say or whisper the following:

“Diana, Janus, hear my prayer
and bless this sacred altar.

For all year long let earth’s riches empower me.
Let abundance bring me happiness.
Let your wholeness bring me prosperity.”

Say this three times, and then thank your deities.

“Thank you, Diana for your help.
Thank you, Janus, for your direction.”

Now leave the candles burning for a few minutes while you gaze at your altar and calm your mind.

Finishing Up

When you feel the spell is complete, leave the cup cakes at a crossroads or cemetery. If those places are not available or accessible to you, put them out for the birds. Empty the bag of earth somewhere outside where you feel really happy to be. As you sprinkle the earth on the ground, Janus and Diana will start to work the magick of prosperous living into your life.

Note:

This spell can be done at any time during the year when you are wanting to make a fresh start, or if you are heading out in a new direction.

When an animal goes missing, one common immediate response is to post signs requesting information and assistance from others. This Russian spell takes that notion a step further: assistance is requested from Earth’s various spirit powers, so that they will locate and send your animal back home. As with standard signs, a reward is posted. Should the spell work, be sure to pay it.

Write messages on three pieces of birch bark – one for each of the nature Tsars. It should read as follows:

I’m writing to the Forest Tsar and the Forest Tsarina
and their small children.

I’m writing to the Earth Tsar and the Earth Tsarina
and their small children.

I’m writing to the Water Tsar and the Water Tsarina
and their small children.

I’m writing to inform you that _______ (insert your name)
has lost a _______

(insert color, gender, description, and type of animal including as much descriptive material as you feel is necessary to identify and distinguish your animal from others.)

If you have him/her please send him/her back
without delaying one day, one hour, one minute, one second.

If you don’t comply with my wish,
I swear to pray and testify against you.

If you comply with my wish,
I shall give you _______ (insert specific pledge).

Fasten one message to a tree in the forest, Bury the second in Earth. Attach a small stone to the third and throw it into some living water (such as a river, ocean, creek, lake, etc).

The animal is expected to find its way home shortly.

Note:

The Forest Tsar is chief of all woodland spirits; the Water Tsar is chief of all water spirits and so on. Adjust this spell if necessary to suit your circumstances.

The Dragon King of the Sea can be called upon for help and assistance. Here’s how:

  • Whisper your message, needs, or desires over a loaf of bread.
  • Feed this bread to river or ocean fish.
  • Tell the fish to please deliver your message to the Dragon King of the Sea.

When help arrives, be sure to return with offerings of gratitude.

Here is a “Cat in the Cradle” ritual spell from Switzerland. Approximately one month after the wedding, visiting friends should bring a tomcat (not neutered) and a cradle to the new couple’s home. The cat is rocked in the cradle before the newlyweds.

  • Thai Marital Fertility Spell

In this Thai ritual, during the actual wedding ceremony, an older couple ritually prepares the bedroom so that it will be ready for use by the bride and groom. The room must be spiritually cleansed, protection set up and talismans left behind to radiate good fortune.

Talismans include bags of rice, sesame seeds, coins, and a tomcat (for happiness and fertility). The cat doesn’t have to be a gift, it can be someone’s pet that just hangs out in the room for a little while, emanating energy. The one caveat is that the cat may not be neutered. It defeats the purpose of the spell.

Note: This may be a good opportunity to adopt a stray from a shelter and let it participate in the ceremony prior to neutering.

For protection and blessings by the goddess Bast, of yourself and your cat pets, set up an altar with cat pictures and/or statues. These pictures and statues can be of any kind of cat, domestic or wild. Place a picture of yourself, your family, and some of your cats there also. Have two green candles on the altar. This ritual can be performed by itself or as part of a cast circle ritual.

Note: This ritual also calls for a sistrum, which is a sort of rattle made of metal, and deeply associated with the goddess Bast and Egyptian magick. If you don’t have one, use a bell or small wind chimes instead.

To begin the ritual, take the sistrum and slowly dance or walk around the ritual area, shaking the sistrum as you go. Begin and end in the East and move clockwise. Chant as you go:

Joy comes from Bast, the Lady of Cats
The goddess loves and protects all animals.
As a daughter/son of Bast, I call upon her
To pour out her blessings.

Return to the altar and shake the sistrum while you say:

Hail, Bast, Lady of Cats.
Hail, Goddess of earthly delights.
Teach me to rejoice in the being that I am.
Teach me to love and be happy.

If you have pictures of your cats, look at them now with love and happiness. If you don’t have pictures, call up their images mentally. Call each cat by name as if presenting him/her to the goddess. Be alert to the atmosphere around you, for you will very likely experience the presence of the goddess in some manner.

When you have finished, take the sistrum and go to the East. Shake the sistrum five times. Say:

The ears of Bast are sensitive
to every word of harm sent against me and my pets.
My cats and I are protected.

To to the South, shake the sistrum five times and say:

The claws of Bast are sharp in my defence.
My cats and I are protected.

Move to the West. Shake the sistrum five times. Say:

The teeth of Bast are bared to evil-doers.
My cats and I are protected.

Finally, go to the North and shake the sistrum five times. Say:

The eyes of Bast can see through darkness.
Nothing escapes her notice.
My cats and I are protected.

Return to the altar. Shake the sistrum three times. Say:

Listen well, all those who would harm me and mine.
Here is erected a mighty fortress, an unbreakable shield.
You cannot enter here. Your evil thoughts return to you.
The gate is locked against you.

Visualize a green light filling the room, caressing you and the pictures of your cats. Don’t be surprised if your cats themselves enter the room to soak up this blessing.

Lovely Cat-Goddess, I thank you for your blessings.
Keep us in safety, good health, and happiness.
Protect my little ones wherever they may roam.

Blow a kiss to the goddess and extinguish the candles. As a special treat, both to Bast and to your cats, present your pets with a catnip toy to play with.

To petition Bast (the goddess of cats) for healing of cats, chant the following before her picture/statue while holding an actual picture or mental image of the sick animal:

Lift the hand of disease.
Restore health!

Cast out all illness.
Restore health!

Pour your healing powers through (name of cat).
Bast! Restore Health!

Repeat the chant 5 times, or until you feel it is complete.
