Here is a spell that calls upon Ilmatar for increased creativity and spiritual growth:

The Finnish-Ugrian goddess Ilmatar was the virgin daughter of Air. she had immense creative powers, and was known as Water Mother, Daughter of Nature, and Sky Mother. Legends say that she created the world and gave birth to the first great hero, Vainamoinen. This son was a great sorcerer and magician. He invented the zither and was such a superb musician that his playing tamed wild animals. More about Ilmatar can be found here: Ilmatar Finnish Goddess of Creation

Decorate your sacred space with red eggs and flowers. Burn cinnamon incense and a pale green candle. Say:

Teacher of magick and wisdom,
Enlighten me.
Bestower of knowledge,
Open the door to ritual meaning.
Peace and contentment, I ask of you.

Sit in quiet meditation. Feel yourself riding in a boat on a gentle lake. Beside you is the goddess Ilmatar. Listen carefully to what she says. Talk with her as long as you wish. when you come back say:

Healing, knowledge, mental powers,
All come from your creativity.
Eloquence and self-control
I ask now that you give to me.
Guidance I need and inspiration.
Teachers send with motives true.
I desire to learn, to expand my mind.
For these gifts, Ilmatar, I do thank you.

Here is a spell to call upon Ilmatar for help conceiving a child:

Decorate your sacred space with red eggs and small flowers. Burn a pink candle and rose incense. (Pink is for birth and love, not necessarily a girl-child.) Say:

Mother of all mothers, hear my cry.
My arms are empty, my heart full of love.
Ripen my body with a little child,
A soul that needs and loves me in return.
Gift this child with wholeness and health.
Fill my arms, Mother of all mothers.

Sit quietly in meditation. Visualize yourself being drawn into Ilmatar’s lap by her loving arms. Lay your head against her breast. Hear her loving heart beat in sympathy. Put your arms around her and tell Ilmatar of your deep desire for a child. Listen to her words of wisdom and comfort. Take as long as you need to fill up with her love and comfort. When you come back, say:

Ilmatar, loving and caring Mother,
My heart beats in time with yours.
All children come from your heart.
I ask sincerely that you entrust me with a child.
This child will be loved and cared for,
For this is truly my desire.

Here is a nice ritual to invoke favor from Weavers of Fate, the Moerae. It is particularly appropriate for birthdays, the New Year, the Kalends of January, or any day of significance and change. The Moerae (or Moirai) were supposed to appear three nights after a child’s birth to determine the course of its life, so this too would be an appropriate time for this ritual.

three_fates_by_misticunicorn

Who are they?

The Moerae are the three sisters who decide on human fate: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropus. They sing in unison with the music of the Sirens, or so it is said. Lachesis sings of the things that were, Clotho of those that are, and Atropus about the things that will be. They are most honored among the gods because they distribute justly, and have a share in every home. They give men at their birth their share of evil and good, and they punish the transgressions of both men and of gods.

  • Lachesis (the past): the apportioner of lots.
  • Clotho (the present): is the spinner.
  • Atropus (the future): is said to be the eldest, the best and the shortest of the sisters.

It has also been claimed that Tyche (Fortune) was one of the Moerae, and the most powerful of the sisters because beauty, virtue, and good Fame are in her keeping, and also because she finds pleasure in dashing immoderate hopes.

The Ritual

Colors: White, red, and black.

Element: Air

Altar: Drape with cloths of white, red, and black, and place upon it three candles in these same colors, three goblets in these same colors holding white wine, red wine, and elderberry wine, a spindle wound with handspun thread, a piece of woven cloth, and a large knife or pair of shears.

Offerings: Libations of wine.

Daily Meal: Vegan. Should be eaten in silence.

Invocation to the Moerae

(Light the white candle and raise the spindle.)

Spin truth into words,
Spin words into doom,
Spin doom into fortune,
Spin fortune into life,
Spin my life fine and strong,

O Lady with the spindle
Whose thread is my beginning.

(All take a piece of thread from the spindle. Pour out the white wine as a libation. Light the red candle and lift the woven cloth high.)

Weave truth into vision,
Weave vision into mind,
Weave mind into spirit,
Weave spirit into life,
Weave my life with depth and color,

O Lady with the shuttle
Whose tapestry is my existence.

(All knot their thread. Pour out the red wine. Light the black candle and lift the shears high.)

Cut truth away from falsehood,
Cut falsehood away from illusion,
Cut illusion away from matter,
Cut matter away from body,
Cut my body away from my life
When the time comes,
O Lady with the shears
Whose knowing hand is my doom
And also my truth.

(The leader of the ritual drapes his or her head with a cloth of black and walks around the circle, cutting each thread in silence. The cut threads are laid upon the altar as an offering, and all sit in silence, meditating on their Fate and that of the coming year. Leave in silence.)

From: Pagan Book of Hours

samhain-demandPlace upon the altar apples, pomegranates, pumpkins, squashes and other late autumn fruits. Autumn flowers such as marigolds and chrysanthemums are fine too. Write on a piece of paper an aspect of your life which you wish to be free of: anger, a baneful habit, misplaced feelings, disease. The cauldron or some similar tool must be present before the altar as well, on a trivet or some other heat-proof surface (if the legs aren’t long enough). A small, flat dish marked with an eight-spoked wheel symbol should also be there.

Prior to the ritual, sit quietly and think of friends and loved ones who have passed away. Do not despair. Know that they have gone on to greater things. Keep firmly in mind that the physical isn’t the absolute reality, and that souls never die.

Arrange the altar, light the candles and censer, and cast the Circle of Stones. Recite a Blessing Chant, and invoke the Goddess and God in any way that feels right to you.

Lift one of the pomegranates and, with your freshly-washed white-handled knife, pierce the skin of the fruit. Remove several seeds and place them on the wheel-marked dish. Raise your wand, face the altar and say:

On this night of Samhain I mark your passing,
O Sun King, through the sunset into the Land of the Young.
I mark also the passing of all who have gone before,
and all who will go after. O Gracious Goddess,
Eternal Mother, You who gives birth to the fallen,
teach me to know that in the time of the greatest
darkness there is the greatest light.

Taste the pomegranate seeds; burst them with your teeth and savor their, bittersweet flavor. Look down at the eight-spooked symbol on the plate; the wheel of the year, the cycle of the seasons, the end and beginning of all creation.

Light a fire within the cauldron (a candle is fine). Sit before it holding the piece of paper, gazing at its flames. Say:

Wise One of the Waning Moon,
Goddess of the starry night,
I create this fire within your cauldron
to transform that which is plaguing me.
May the energies be reversed:
From darkness, light!
From bane, good!
From death, birth!

Light the paper in the cauldron’s flame and drop it inside. As it burns, know that your ill diminishes, lessens and finally leaves you as it is consumed within the universal fires.

If you wish, you may attempt scrying or some other form of divination, for this is a perfect time to look into the past or future. Try to recall past lives too, if you will. But leave the dead in peace. Honor them with your memories but do not call them to you. Release any pain and sense of loss you may feel into the cauldron’s flames.

Works of magic, if necessary, may follow. Celebrate the Simple Feast. The circle is released.

binding-spellOn your altar place two red candles at either end. Before doing this, rub the two candles with rose essential oil. This spell is best begun on a Friday, the day of the week devoted to the Goddess Aphrodite, perform this task to attract your beloved.

Write your name on one candle, and your beloved’s on the other. If you do not know his or her name, simply write “my beloved” or “my true love.” Try to use language that will ensure positive magic. If you simply write “handsome” you may well end up with someone gorgeous, but who is harmful for you in some other way.

Each evening at seven, light the candles and move them slightly closer together. Carve into your candle a word of special significance to you, perhaps taken from insights while meditating. Perhaps the word “devoted” should be carved into your beloved’s candle. On your own, write the same. Meditate on this quality for several minutes, then snuff out the candles. Repeat this for seven nights, using a different quality each time, until on the seventh, the following Friday, both candles are finally standing as close together as possible. Light them and let them burn down and out.

If any wax remains, scatter it before you as you walk through a beautiful place, wishing it to bring good fortune to others hoping for love.

harmony

Light a candle and say the following:

Goddess please help me to be,
Accepting from others idiosyncrasies.
Let me truly see the value of,
Greeting all with perfect love.
Guide my heart to let others be,
And treasure their individuality.
Each one unique and special find,
A positive thought in my mind.
To always be kind and fair,
So mote it be I now declare.

Each time you say it….
the spell will be stronger.

Need a snow day?
All you need for this spell is one black candle.

Directions:

Light the candle the night before the day you want the snow day.
Then recite the following incantation three times:

Goddess Hecate,
I call upon thee,
make tomorrow a snow day,
so mote it be.

NOTE: This spell is best used to catch up on work, or something important, and not to laze around or it will either not work, or backfire. Use a new candle every time.

A total lunar eclipse took place on December 20/21, 2010. Called the Christmas lunar eclipse, it was visible after midnight Eastern Standard Time on December 21 in North and South America. This was a very rare event, and the following spell was very powerful at that particular time. This does not mean that this spell could not be used, with a few minor variations, during any lunar eclipse coming up in the future.

wwb_img67

This combines the power of the full and new moon all at once. Any spell performed this night needs to be done carefully as you will be invoking the Triple Goddess in each of her forms. That it falls on Yule brings into play the birth of the Unconquered Sun, and invokes the full power of the God as well. Total lunar eclipses always involve the full moon, and as such, are the time of perfect union between the sun and the moon. Spells for fertility, new ventures, success, love, and miracles are greatly enhanced when worked during the eclipse.

Consider carefully what you wish and write it out before hand. I would strongly suggest writing your ritual on parchment in sacred ink using a “pen of art” or a sacred writing utensil. Remember, use only consecrated tools as this is a time not only of the full moon, but of the new.

Once you have your spell written (mine will be for happiness and wealth never being detrimental, but only to their and my benefit) and your candles ready (for happiness I have chosen yellow and pink. For wealth, I have chosen forest green and blue) and your altar set up, relax, and take a nice long bath in something heavy with Jasmine.

Drink a cup of Jasmine tea if possible. I can get dried Jasmine flowers from a local herb shop and so include them in my bath and on my altar. My altar for the full/new moon is dedicated to the Morrigan and Brigid, two Goddess whom I never choose.

Cast the circle and once cast, light the non-ritual candles. Meditate gently and allow your mind to go blank then focus on your spell. Now, light the candles related to your spell, using whatever chants you have chosen. Take the scroll of paper you wrote the spell on and pass it over each element. See the energy of that element weaving it’s own magic into the spell on the paper. Wave the parchment over each of the spell candles.

If you can, light the spell from each of the spell candles and allow it to burn in a safe place, visualizing the energies trapped in the paper of the spell being released to do their purpose. Allow the candles and all ritual items to burn themselves out. Do not reuse any candles, incense, salt or herbs that were used in this ceremony. Take all ashes, salt and whatever else “disposable” you used and wrap in a piece of cotton or silk. Treat this as you would the ashes of a sacred fire, using them to bless an area or keeping them as a talisman.
