Energy

Wake Up and Breathe

Stress is detrimental. But you already knew that! So why when you open your eyes in the morning to nothing but a dismal morning, does your stress only get heavier and deeper? You draw in a soothing breath, not realizing the benefits swirling about in that one inhalation.

What if you could tap into that energy and positivity upon waking?

Now, please don’t mistake simple breathing workouts as some new age mumbo jumbo, or even think that you should just ignore it because you already know how to breathe!

You know how to run, but can you run a marathon?

How Do Breathing Exercises Work?

Breathing fully and deeply stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) (source).

This system is for the mellow, steady-state activity going on in your body constantly. When the PNS is moderated, the blood vessels dilate, the GI tract is stimulated, nutrients are absorbed, and the fight-or-flight response is mitigated.

Thus, breathing exercises give you control over the parasympathetic nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve that works like an on/off switch (source).

These breathing exercises all have a basis in mediation and yoga and you will start to notice the focus on counting as you go through them.

  • Why is this important?

Well, focusing on something other than the day ahead is a great way to actually begin your day relaxed! A novel thought I know, but it works!

6 Breathing Exercises to Jumpstart Your Morning

Breathing exercises may sound like something from yoga class, but there are 6 exercises that can bring sunshine and warmth to every morning. These six morning breathing exercises are not only relaxing, they shake off any lingering remnants of sleep.

By doing this in the morning or whenever you are in a pinch for tranquility, you turn on the PNS, and regain control of your mind and body.

Wake up, breathe, and get ready to tackle the day ahead of you.

  • 1. Simple Belly Breathing

This is considered one of the most basic types of breath work – perfect for beginners who want an introduction to these types of exercises. You may find that you know it from a yoga class you took months ago. It is very simple and not too intense.

  1. Sit or lay comfortably on a flat surface, such as a yoga mat or on your bed. It doesn’t matter as long as your back is straight.
  2. Place one hand over your stomach, just below the ribcage, with the bottom edge of your hand (the pinky) resting over the navel.
  3. Place your second hand over your chest.
  4. Inhale deeply through the nostrils, trying expand the space beneath the bottom hand first. Your chest should not lift or expand in any way.
  5. Breathe out through your mouth. Purse your lips. Gently use the hand on your stomach to guide the abdominals inwards, pressing out the exhalation.
  6. Repeat this breathing 3 to 10 times.

Remember to go slowly with the breath to get as much air in and out as possible. You might find that controlling the breath is harder than you think! Keep practicing.

  • Equal Breathing

Also called “sama vritti,” this breathing practice works like counting sheep or muttering a calming mantra. You can do this one anywhere or anytime you need instant relaxation.

  1. To start, find a comfortable position for yourself. Close your eyes and notice your natural rhythm of breath. Do not change it at all.
  2. Begin to slowly count to four as you inhale. Find a moment of stillness when the lungs are completely full.
  3. Then count to four as you exhale. Take a moment to sit in the emptiness.
  4. Repeat this pattern, making the duration of the inhalations and exhalations equal.

Continue for several minutes.

  • Morning Breathing

This is the perfect way to start the morning – even more effective than a shot of high quality espresso.

Oftentimes, when you wake up in the morning, you are already primed for stress due to your body still thinking that it is in the year 25,000 BCE and expecting a sabre tooth tiger to pounce on you!

Morning breathing will relax the body, minimizing tension that might have accumulated overnight.

  1. Stand up straight with the knees slightly bent. Bounce a few times, feeling the floor with the balls and soles of your feet.
  2. Begin to bend forward from the waist, hinging. Let the arms loose, hanging towards the floor.
  3. Take a deep breath in. Imagine yourself as an inflatable lawn ornament slowly rising up from the ground. Roll up through the spine, letting the head be the last thing to lift.
  4. As you exhale again, return to the bent over position.

Repeat this flowing breath until all tension from the body is released and you feel a warmth moving through your limbs.

  • Deep Muscle Relaxation Breathing

This is a bit time consuming and thus should only be done when you have a break to devote to pure relaxation. Used together with simple belly breathing, this is a gateway to removing discomfort from various parts of your body.

  1. Lay down on your back, either on a yoga or pilates mat or the floor (if you have carpet). Close your eyes. Take a few normal breaths.
  2. Once you have established an even flow of breath, you may move onto the second part of the exercise.
  3. Relax your face by scrunching the nose and knitting the brows together. Release with the breath.
  4. Move on to the neck. Tilt the chin up and down, side-to-side. Shake your head yes and no. Then with the exhale, release.
  5. Relax your shoulders, shrugging them up towards the ears. Hold for a moment then release.
  6. Relax the torso by moving the limbs into an X form, stretching on in all positions. Stretch for several seconds then release.
  7. Lastly, relax the legs by pointing and flexing the toes as well as circling the ankles. Point, flex, stretch, and then release.
  8. Lay in silence for some time, once again returning to modulated breath.

You may desire to repeat this process several times, paying special attention to the parts of your body that need more tension removed.

  • Alternate Nostril Breathing

Yoga classes often incorporate this type of pranayama into the beginning of the lesson. It is said to bring forth a sense of unwavering calmness and composure. Definitely worth a try when you are stressed over work or exams.

  1. Start in any meditative posture that has the spine in a long, straight, neutral position.
  2. As you breathe, hold the right thumb over the right nostril and inhale solely through the left.
  3. At the apex of the inhalation, you will switch to sealing off the left nostril with the right ring finger and open the right nostril.
  4. Exhale through the right nostril.

Continue the pattern for some time then switch the process.

  • Kapalabhati or “Skull Shining Breath”

This is an involved, intense breathing practice that offers a challenge to those who may have mastered other exercises.

  1. You start seated on the floor with legs crossed or extended out in front of you. Begin with the simple breath work to regulate the pattern of the breath.
  2. Then, take a long, drawn out inhalation. At the end, contract the lower abdominals and sharply exhale. Do this several times to get comfortable with the contraction.
  3. Once you are comfortable with that, increase the tempo to sharp inhale, sharp exhale for 10 breaths total. Use only the nose.

A Simple Breathing Exercise To Give You More Energy

Most people breathe very shallowly in day-to-day life. This is often referred to as “chest breathing.” Chest breathing generally starts between ages 4 and 7, which is when you start to develop voluntary control of the musculature in the thoracic region (chest).

But do you ever wonder why babies have that wonderful ability to cry and scream very loudly, despite their size? The reason: The way they breathe, which is commonly called “diaphragmatic breathing.” In diaphragmatic breathing, your stomach expands outward, while the lower ribs expand sideways, which causes the diaphragm to contract.

These movements draw air into the lungs, and not just the upper lungs, as in chest breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing fills every part your lungs, including the lower parts. When you exhale, the abdomen pushes in and up. The lower rib cage contracts inward, the diaphragm expands, and the air is forced out.

So why should you breathe from the diaphragm?

The capillaries in your lungs help exchange oxygen with the rest of your body, and there are more of them in the lower parts of the lungs than in the upper parts of the lungs. When you breathe shallowly, you have work harder.

An additional benefit from breathing “low” is that the abdominal muscles expand and contract around all of the organs of digestion. This will assist them in functioning better and promote better digestion.

Finally, imagine feeling more energized and having the ability to think more clearly, with more focus and fewer distractions. Increased oxygen can contribute to greater mental capabilities. Furthermore, higher oxygen content in the blood stream leads to healthier organs, muscles and tissues. I could go on and on about the benefits.

Let’s give it a try. All you need are these four steps:

  1. Sit up straight in a chair.
  2. Place your hands on your stomach.
  3. Inhale through your nose (which filters the air before entering your lungs) and breathe into your stomach, feeling it extend outward (as opposed to your chest).
  4. Exhale through your nose or your mouth by pushing your stomach in and up (never down).

That’s it.

In Conclusion

With a conscious effort, you could change old habits into healthy new habits. It’s truly painless!

You can integrate breathing into your daily living very easily — you simply have to be conscious of it. When you wake up in the morning, think about it. When you go to sleep at night, think about it. Instead of yelling at a stoplight to change, focus on your breath. When someone is talking to you and you have no interest in what they are saying, turn your attention to your breathing.

After you notice the calming and concentrating effects this simple act can have, you’ll begin to incorporate it more automatically. Focused individuals tend to accomplish more, enjoy a higher standard of living, and often live life more passionately, making each day an adventure instead of simply a destination.

Good luck!

Feng Shui In The Bathroom

I found this great little article about How A Bathroom Flushes Prosperity & What You Can Do About It. And I thought it was time to take a peek into our bathrooms, especially now that we are making all that wonderfully luxurious and delicious bath stuff.

Bathrooms and toilets have a really bad reputation as far as feng shui is concerned. This is because bathrooms and toilets have the tendency to drain or flush away the positive “Qi” energy of your home.

Hence, if “Qi” enters the bathroom, n rest assured that chances are it’s being flushed right out of your house and we certainly don’t want that to happen.

Since each and every part or corner of a house is related to an aspect of life, a bathroom in one particular corner or part would affect that specific area of life, and without proper precautions, will drain the luck or benefits of that aspect of life.

A bathroom in the center of your home:

A bathroom in the center of the house is usually considered bad feng shui. As the center of the house is the heart of the space in feng shui, also called the yin-yang point, you want to have it open, light and with a sense of beauty to it. Take these steps to fill your center home bathroom with good feng shui:

  • Keep the bathroom clean and tidy
  • Add art, candles or flowers to the room
  • Position several air-purifying plants in the bathroom
  • Be aware of the light quality in the room and add a dimmer switch to adjust the light if the room has no window
A bathroom facing the front door:

The reason a bathroom door facing the main door is considered bad feng shui is simple: the Universal energy, or Chi, comes into the house through the front door. If your bathroom is facing the front door, most of the good energy will escape through the bathroom, leaving little or no good feng shui energy to nourish the house. Use these practical tips to improve the potentially bad feng shui situation of a bathroom door facing your front door.

  • Keep the bathroom door closed
  • Create good feng shui in the bathroom
  • Create a focal point near the entry to direct energy away from the bathroom
  • Focus on good feng shui in the entry area to enhance the energy in the area
A bathroom in the money area:

A bathroom in the feng shui money area can certainly be a challenge. The first thing to do when you are dealing with any challenging feng shui area is to commit to keeping it very clean and orderly. There can be no good feng shui without cleanliness and order, and this especially applies to a challenging bagua area. Next, you can explore feng shui money area decorating tips and see which ones are possible to apply in your home. They include:

  • Decorate the area with lush green plants
  • Use pleasant scents, fresh flowers, and candles in the area
  • Decorate with images of natural landscapes
  • Add a water feature or mirror for good feng shui
A bathroom facing the kitchen area:

Having the kitchen and the bathroom doors face each other is very bad feng shui. You don’t need to know much about feng shui to intuitively understand that this is not a good setup for a healthy home. When two doors are opposite each other, the feng shui energies flow faster in and out of the spaces guarded by the doors. The solution is to create as much division between the two areas as possible. Use these tips:

  • Keep the bathroom door closed
  • Keep the bathroom clean and filled with good feng shui energy
  • Use a divider screen, bamboo curtain or a tall plant to define the boundary between the two rooms
  • Use different paint on the kitchen door wall and the bathroom door wall to define the areas
  • Create a focal point between the two areas
A bathroom above the bedroom area:

A bathroom located above the bedroom is not good feng shui. An important factor to consider in looking for feng shui cures is how busy the upstairs bathroom will be. Combat the bad feng shui using these tips:

  • Limit the upstairs bathroom to occasional use, such as a guest bathroom
  • Relocate the bed if it is situated directly beneath the bathroom
  • Use very light colors in the upstairs bathroom
  • Use design features on the bedroom ceiling such as crown molding or a decorative medallion around the ceiling light
A bathroom over your front door:

If you have a bathroom above your front door, it is very important to take care of its good feng shui, as the quality of energy that comes through the front door determines the quality of energy in the house. Use these tips to address the challenging feng shui of a bathroom over your front door:

  • Keep the bathroom clean and tidy
  • Strengthen the bathroom feng shui element and keep the door closed
  • Create a separation between the two spaces with a bathroom rug or deep color floor
  • Position a crystal chandelier in the main entry
  • Strengthen the feng shui of the main entrance with tall vertical elements
A bathroom under the staircase:

Stairs have a bad reputation in feng shui, although it isn’t as bad as the reputations of bathrooms. If you have a bathroom located under a staircase, you’ll need to take steps to address this challenging feng shui situation. Both areas require special attention to enhancing good feng shui.

  • Keep the stairs well lit and in good repair
  • Use light colors for the staircase
  • Position a crystal chandelier at the bottom of the staircase for good feng shui
  • Move a bathroom located under a staircase if possible
  • Keep the feng shui elements of the bathroom strong
  • Keep the door to the bathroom closed at all times
  • Decorate the bathroom in colors appropriate for its sector
A bathroom in the south-east sector:

Since South-East part of a house is related to wealth, a bathroom in this part will drain away all the money from the house; joblessness, sinking income, increasing debt and even bankruptcy are some effects of South-East bathroom

For bathrooms located in the South-East sector of your home, follow the basic recommendations for good feng shui in any bathroom. Keep the door and toilet lid closed and keep the bathroom clean and tidy. In addition, these tips can improve the feng shui of the room:

  • Position several air-purifying plants in the bathroom
  • Hang a mirror on the bathroom door (following feng shui mirror guidance)
  • Use metallic colored gold, silver or gray rugs, preferably in circular shapes
  • Hang a metallic wind chime in the area
  • Burn candles in the room frequently
A bathroom in the north-west sector:

The North-West part of the house deals with helpful people and luck from heaven, a toilet in this part will drain away all those from you. No help from anyone, backstabbing, office politics, discredit etc. are some effects of North-West bathroom.

North-West sector bathrooms should follow the basic recommendations for good feng shui. Avoid clutter and don’t position a mirror to reflect the toilet seat. Replace any leaky faucets to prevent them from flushing away money. In addition:

  • Use lush houseplants in the bathroom
  • Put a container with water in the room
  • Use a blue rug on the bathroom floor
  • Never use metallic chimes in a North-West bathroom

General Rules For Good Feng Shui in the Bathroom

A bathroom has to be somewhere in the house. Doesn’t it? The answer to that it yes, but remember, it’s vital to  minimize – or possibly eliminate – the draining or flushing of chi and the “good” from your life.

The main feng shui cure – and the most solid one – to neutralize the negative energy of a bathroom is to actually take good care of your bathroom. If you focus on creating good energy in your bathroom if you transform your bathroom into a beautiful spa – why would you need protection from its energy then?

There are any ways to create a bathroom that has a clear, fresh and nourishing energy, you just have to put some time and effort into creating good energy, and then maintaining it.

Here is a list of general bathroom tips:

  • Always keep the bathroom door closed.
  • Make sure to keep the toilet lid closed.
  • Replace any torn curtains with new ones.
  • Keep the bathroom clean, fresh and airy.
  • Use a good air freshener.
  • Make sure that the bathroom receives ample sunlight and fresh air.
  • Keep windows, ventilators and doors of bathroom clean.
  • Get the best essential aromatic oils for a relaxed bath.

If there’s a bathroom in North-East or South-West then;

  • Hang a metallic wind chime in the bathroom.
  • Make sure that there are no Chinese symbols on the chime.
  • Make sure that no one passes or sits under the wind chime.
  • Place metallic colored rugs such as gold, silver or grey; circular shaped ones must be preferred.

If there’s a bathroom in South then;

  • Hang a crystal ball in the window of the bathroom; the rainbow lights from the crystal will reduce the bad fire energy.
  • Make sure to cleanse the crystal ball as it’s going to absorb negative energy.
  • Alternatively, you can also use a crystal geode which is a rock with hollow center.
  • lace square shaped skin colored rug; you can also opt for yellow, pink or chocolate brown colored ones.

If there’s a bathroom in North then;

  • Place some lush green houseplants in the bathroom.
  • Put a square shaped rug in shades of green.

If there’s a bathroom in East or South-East then;

  • Place glitter lamps in the bathroom and make sure to turn them on for around 2-3 hours daily.
  • If glitter lamps aren’t your thing then you can light candles in the bathroom.
  • Triangular rugs in shades of red are best for such a bathroom.

If there’s a bathroom in West or North-West then;

  • Just place an urn with water in the bathroom.
  • Place blue shaded rug; if possible, get a wavy shaped one.

What to Avoid

  • Avoid clutter in the bathroom; in fact avoid it everywhere.
  • Avoid mirrors reflecting toilet seats.
  • Avoid leaking taps and faucets; replace them immediately else they’ll flush away the money.
  • Replace broken items, such as, soap dispensers, shampoo bottles etc.
  • Don’t keep old and worn-out toothbrushes in bathroom.
  • Avoid a bathroom or toilet at the center of home.
  • Avoid bathroom door facing bedroom, kitchen or dining room.
  • Avoid locating a bathroom adjacent or near to house entrance.
  • Never have a bathroom above kitchen or main door.
  • Avoid locating a bathroom or toilet under staircases.
  • Never place metallic wind chimes in North, North-West or West bathroom.
  • Never try to place metallic things in the South-East bathroom; it’ll drain away all the money from house.

Mirrors and bathroom doors:

The reason mirrors are sometimes recommended in feng shui for the bathroom door is because a mirror can make a wall or a door energetically disappear, so to speak.

A mirror also pushes the energy back; this is why, for example, it is always recommended to avoid a mirror facing the main door.

A mirror outside the bathroom door is sometimes used in feng shui as the mirror pushes the energy away from entering the bathroom, thus the energy is prevented from going down the drain. Bathrooms have a very bad reputation in feng shui, so a mirror on the bathroom door became a popular feng shui cure for it.

You have to decide for yourself if a mirror on the bathroom door is something you would like in your home decor scheme. And if it makes sense to you.

If you do love mirrors, the best place to have them is not on the bathroom door, but actually in the bathroom.

Mirrors bring the feng shui energy of the water element, and this is excellent for any bathroom as it cleanses – energetically speaking – and refreshes the stagnant and stale energy. Busy bathrooms create a lot of low or challenging energy very quickly, so instead of trying to pretend that there is no bathroom there – which is the goal of placing a mirror on the door, I suggest to actually deal with the energy of the bathroom in the first place.

Another point to consider is this: when you place a mirror on the bathroom door, you actually make the door disappear, too! And doors are very important in feng shui as energetic guardians of any given space, they create good containers for specific energies.

Sinks:

Here is a cute idea for the bathroom sink so that the energy doesn’t simply run away down the drain. Of course, the stones you use would have to be maintained so that they wouldn’t attract anything furry or green… like algae or soap scum, but it’s really a cute idea, and worth doing, if you like it!

Important points:

The first and foremost thing about feng shui cures that work is that they have to be really liked by you and make sense in your overall home decor style.

If you bring a so-called powerful feng shui cure that is supposed to work but looks totally out of sorts in your space, I assure you it will not create good feng shui for you. Maybe even quite the opposite.

Last but not least:

Lastly, I thought it might be fun to upload a gallery of really amazing and wonderful bathrooms so that we can drool, and fantasize, and dream…

Morning Coffee Magick

Did you know that coffee has magickal properties? According to my sources, it does! How fun is that? I say, let’s start the day with some magick, along with a really yummy cup of spiced coffee!

Magickal Properties of Coffee

  • Provides peace of mind and grounding.
  • Helps to dispel nightmares, negative thoughts, and overcome blockages and unhealthy emotions. It’s great for protection and getting rid of all kinds of nasties.
  • Coffee is a stimulant and can be used to give spells, potions and charms an extra kick, or speed things up.
  • Coffee grounds can be used in divination and read like tea leaves.
  • It is considered excellent for curse breaking.
  • It can be used as an offering to deities, entities, and ancestors.
  • Some sources suggest it can be used for compulsion, and encouraging others to be more persuasive towards you. This is most effective when the coffee is served to the target.

Here’s a recipe for a cup of magickal morning brew.

Magickal Morning Coffee:

Ingredients:

  • 3 pinches ground ginger
  • 3 pinches cinnamon
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • your favorite ground coffee

Directions:

  1. Add cinnamon to the ground coffee and say: “Cinnamon is for vision, money and love.”
  2. Add the ginger and say: “Ginger is for strength when push comes to shove.”
  3. Add the nutmeg and say: “Nutmeg is for vision, good fortune, and wealth.”
  4. Kiss your fingers and hold them over the coffee and spices, visualizing your love flowing into the coffee, and say: “A kiss keeps you happy and glowing with health.”
  5. Move your hand in a clockwise direction over the coffee spice mixture three times to blend the energies together, then proceed to brew the coffee in your usual manner.

Note: If you add sugar or cream to your coffee, know that sugar sweetens the experience, and cream smooths the way.

Medicinal Properties of Coffee

But wait, there’s more! Coffee has medicinal properties as well.

  • Caffeine (in coffee) improves short-term alertness, attention, memory and may have long term protective benefits on cognitive decline as well.
  • Many studies confirm that aspirin and other analgesics work faster and better on headaches, when combined with caffeine.
  • Coffee consumption has been associated with long term weight loss, likely from the thermogenic effects of caffeine raising the metabolic rate.

On a side note: Nursing mothers who drink coffee might transfer the caffeine to their babies, giving them insomnia, in which case this may not be the best way to start the day.

Color Matters

Also, it does seem to matter what cup you put that coffee in. Research shows that hot beverages served in an orange cup or mug taste better than drinks served in say, for example, a white one. So… if you have an orange cup, drink your coffee in that. But if you don’t, that’s OK too. Just be on the look out at garage sales and thrift shops for cups and mugs that are orange. They don’t have to be orange on the inside, it’s the outside color that seems to matter. And if you find something really beautiful… well… that’s even better!

A Few Simple Tips

If you are having trouble finding a focus, or if it seems hard to focus your energy with any intensity, here area a few simple tips that I found at Moksha Mantra.

  • Yoga asana:

The traditional Indian techniques of Yoga asana can help you focus more. The researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign proved this, after their study on 30 participants. Those who took a single, 20-minute yoga asana session were considerably faster and more accurate on their tests on working memory and inhibitory control, when compared to participants who walked or jogged on a treadmill for 20 minutes. Working memory and inhibitory control are the measures of brain function associated with the ability to concentrate, recollect and use new information.

  • Drink water:

Staying hydrated will improve your level of concentration. Researchers from the University of Connecticut’s Human Performance Laboratory found out that even mild dehydration affects mental functioning.

  • Sleep:

Improper sleep patterns can make one easily distracted. If you’re facing problems to focus of late, please ascertain whether you are sleeping for at least 6 to 7 hours every night. Dr Vatsal G Thakkar of the New York University School of Medicine believes that a lack of delta sleep often leads to concentration issues. Delta sleep is the deep stage of sleep, which is important for efficient cognitive functioning.

  • Meditation:

Find time to meditate, even it is for half an hour every day. A study by the University of Washington found out that meditation helped workers to concentrate better. A study by the University of California on 48 undergraduate students also found out that meditation decreases distraction and increases working memory.

  • Reduce stress and anxiety:

Proper management of stress and anxiety is essential to maintain your focus over a long period of time. If you’re feeling overtly anxious and stressful, a consultation with a psychologist or a counselor might do a world of good for you.

  • Food:

What we eat determines how our brain is. The food we eat significantly affects our cognitive functions. Try eating adequate quantities of nutritious food at regular intervals. Have at least three wholesome meals every day.

It’s a Theme

A focus is a little bit like a theme, I think. When you have a good theme for a project, or a story, or a party, it becomes so much easier to plan. You know what fits in and what doesn’t. It’s much easier to filter through your options and make decisions. Ideas seem to come more readily, and everything tends to fall more easily into place. At least, that’s my experience.

When you don’t have a theme, or one central basic idea, it’s way too easy to  become confused, to get lost in the details, to over think and over do. Not that you wouldn’t ever over think and over do, and get lost in the details even with a theme.

  • So, what’s your theme for this day? this week? this year?
  • How do you even know what the theme is?

My current theme is shirleytwofeathers.com… everything I think about, everything I plan for, everything I do revolves around the website. It’s a big project, a very ambitious scheme, and I am deeply enmeshed in it. To the point of obsession.  I have, however, had different themes over the years.

  • Playing The Sims Every Waking Moment … that was a fun one.
  • My Life is Hopeless… not nearly as much fun as the Sim Game.
  • Scrambling for Survival… been there done that, not great fun, but very exciting.
  • Self Improvement… all about making me into a better me.
  • Home Improvement DIY… short lived because it exceeded my skill set.

There are a lot more of them. But enough about me. What about you? What’s your current theme? Maybe you’d like to change it into something more interesting, maybe you’d like to narrow the parameters? or widen them?

Here are some ideas I thought might be interesting:

  • Having Fun Every Day
  • Get It Together Or Die Trying
  • Stillpoint
  • Deep Connection With The Earth Herself
  • Paying Debts
  • Healthy Living
  • Eating Well
  • Growing A Savings Account

Whatever your theme is, take a look around, and begin to discard whatever doesn’t fit in with it. For example, if your theme is to “Get Healthy” or “Eat Well” get rid of all the junk food… if the theme is to connect deeply with the Earth Mother, go outside… a lot. Turn off your phone, the television, the computer… If you want to develop a theme of having fun every day, start to eliminate the not fun stuff and adding in the fun stuff.

Dress the part, decorate your home appropriately, focus all of you love and attention on that one idea. Immerse yourself in it. Live it, breathe it, do it.

Adding Fuel to the Fire

Yesterday, I had this realization that simply thinking about something doesn’t necessarily make it happen. You have to be willing to commit time, energy and effort as well. It is a little bit like starting a fire using a magnifying glass and sunlight. The magnifying glass is your focused thought, the sunlight is the energy that flows to where your attention goes. And the tinder, those tiny bits of dry leaves and fluff, is the the beginnings of the effort you are willing to put into the project.

So, today I am thinking about tinder, and fuel for the flame and all the things that help a fire get started, and all those other things that will put it out faster than you can say “boo!”

Here are some examples:

  • A wet blanket… do you have one of those in your life? Are you the wet blanket that gets dropped on your fiery little ideas just starting to “catch?”
  • Rain… you know that old saying, “Did someone rain on your parade?” Are there people, ideas, or influences that bring you down and ruin your plans?
  • Too much too soon… when making a baby fire, too much kindling too soon will quickly smother the tiny flame. Do you get ahead of yourself? Bury yourself with ideas, plans, or tasks before you even get a good start?
  • More than you can chew… a nice big piece of firewood is great, once the fire is established, but when it’s a tiny baby of a flame, a big piece of firewood is almost as effective as a wet blanket when it comes to putting a fire out. Suddenly the task is overwhelming, and you just give up… ever had that happen?
  • A gust of wind… poof, the tinder scatters in the wind, and you have to start over. Usually when that happens, it means that you didn’t protect your little fire well enough. A baby fire needs shelter from the wind, just as beginning projects and budding ideas need shelter from the winds of change and chance.
  • Timing is everything… you can’t start a fire with a magnifying glass if you are sitting in the shade, or it’s after dark. Some ideas, some projects and plans, while they are great and good, just aren’t quite ready to flame into reality. You might have to wait until daylight, or plan for a change in location.

One last thought:

Patience… it takes time and patience to light a fire with a magnifying glass. It doesn’t just happen immediately. The energy has to build. First there is a tiny wisp of smoke, sometimes it doesn’t quite take hold and you have to try again, and then gently you feed it, and nourish it, and help it grow.

Breathe

So simple, and yet so effective. Take a few deep breaths, and then for a few minutes, just focus on your breathing. Concentrate on your breathing as it comes into your body, and then as it goes out. It has a calming effect, especially if you continue to return your focus to your breath when your mind strays. It also allows other thoughts to just float away.

Note: some people might call this meditation, but that word scares some people off, so we’re just going to call it breathing.

Where is your energy focused?

Our next project is due to begin in 2 days, (July 1st) and I’ve decided that it might be interesting and informative to explore the following concepts:

  • Where attention goes energy flows.
  • What you focus on grows.

I first heard this idea way back in the day when I was deeply involved in Transcendental Meditation, and listening to lots of talks by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a new concept then, nor is it new today, and it does seem to have some truth to it.

For example:

You will notice where ever you put your intention, it will occupy a place in your mind/ thoughts. What you focus on has a tendency to grow in life. So today if you are brooding over your unhappy life situation, an unstable bank balance, a broken relationship or your ill health, the fact is, it will trigger a chain of similar thoughts leading to worry and unhappiness.

So what’s the project?

My idea is to spend the next 30 days taking a look at where it is that we are focusing our thoughts, and begin to work on consciously changing that focus so that we are paying attention to those things, situations, and circumstances that we WANT to flow into our experience of life.

The project is due to “officially” begin on July 1st. If you are interested in exploring these ideas and this concept with me, feel free to jump in at any time. I’d love to hear your experiences, insights, and ideas.

How To Call Your Energy Back

We learned today, that it is important to Reclaim Your Energetic Belongings. But in the short talk he gave, Astarius did not explain exactly how to do this. So, I went on a search, and came up with this useful and interesting tutorial on how to call your energy back. I don’t see why it couldn’t be used for just about anything, up to and including reclaiming our energetic belongings.

Here’s the tutorial:

In your day to day interactions, you are continually exchanging energy with other people, places, and situations. Your energy field is ALWAYS interacting with the energy fields of others.

Everything that is made of energy (which is everything that exists), also has an energetic field, an aura, including you.

All day, parts of your aura (energy field) are being sent out in the form of words, or thoughts, for example, to connect with other individuals. As someone speaks to you, their energy is being sent in your direction. And when you speak to someone else, YOUR energy is being sent in their direction.

If you are exerting a lot of energy – physical, emotional, or mental energy, in a conversation, in a meeting, in a project, in a task, you are sending quite a bit of your energy out into this interaction.

When the interaction, situation, or chance meeting is over, your energy doesn’t automatically come back to you.

In fact, it could still be all tied to someone or somewhere else.

This could make you tired, exhausted, and it can even cause you to continue to think about troubling interactions, encounters, and daytime responsibilities when you really just want to disconnect.

Even the mostly Divinely aligned humans run out of energy from time to time, it’s just not sustainable to be continually generating energy and putting it out into this world, saving very little for your own existence.

Calling Back Your Energy

When you don’t call your energy back to you, what happens then is that your energy is out and about, existing everywhere else but in your physical and auric body.

In order for you to feel energized again and to clear your mind and thoughts, and really, to exist as your full and present self, you have to call your energy back to you.

The process of calling your energy back is known as Energy Retrieval. It’s easy to do and learn, and once you get it down, the whole exercise can take you as little as 5 minutes to complete.

The essential practice of energy retrieval – learn to call your energy back in as little as 5 steps.

Energy Retrieval Ritual: How to Call Your Energy Back

  • Find a comfortable place to sit and close your eyes.
  • Take a few deep breaths and relax.
  • Identify locations of your energy.

Recall your day and week, paying specific attention to all areas and people to which and to whom you have given a lot of your energy. As you sit, allow these locations of your energy to come to mind.

Do you think that your energy is existing with your kids, who have been really asking a lot of you today? Believe it – if this is an area where you have expended your energy, you can call it back to you.

What about your partner? Did you have an argument or disagreement earlier, and you are imagining that perhaps this, is a place where your energy might be? It is.

You boss at work has placed some pretty high expectations on you, and you’ve been giving a lot of yourself to your job. Do you imagine that you your energy has been left behind at the office, or in an interaction with your boss? Trust this as fact – your energy is there.

Have you been thinking about the interaction you had with someone in the parking lot at the grocery store? Perhaps they were rude and pulled out in front of you, cutting you off, while you were standing in the cold with your family, waiting to get inside? This is was really upsetting to you, and you can’t seem to stop thinking about it.

It’s time to call your energy back.

  • Visualize your energy returning to you.

Each thought that comes to your mind, or image that you see, trust that this is a location of your energy, and ask it, out loud or in your mind, to return to your body. Imagine all of your energy returning to you from places past, present and future. Years in the past and years in the future alike, when we think about these moments, we unconsciously send our energy to this time.

Visualize your energy as a golden stream of light, flowing back into your body. Choose your center point, and imagine it returning to that place. Imagine your energy flowing in through your mouth, swallowing and resting within your stomach, your physical center.

As your energy continues to flow in, imagine a glowing ball of light growing within you. As the ball of light gets larger and larger, eventually extending into your aura, filling your aura beyond your physical body, less and less of your energy returns out in time and space.

  • Continue until your energy is returned and the stream of light, external to you, has faded.

By performing this exercise, on a daily basis, even on days where you are really tired, you will feel a restored sense of vitality and alertness, ready to give of yourself again.

With Love, Sarah Petruno
