Who is Ganesh?

Ganesha is India’s cutest god. He has the head of an elephant on which is perched a dainty tiara, four pudgy hands joined to a sizeable belly with each hand holding its own symbolic object. One has a trishul, or a trident, the second, an ankush, or goad made from his very own broken tooth, the third hand elegantly holds a lotus and the fourth a rosary (which is sometimes replaced by modaks – his favourite sweet). His appetite for sweets is legendary and offerings of them are often left at his shrine.

Ganesha is famous not only for being a trickster and for his sense of humour, but equally for his wisdom. He is the son of Shiva (Destroyer in the Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer) and Parvati (Shiva’s consort).

The chubby, gentle, wise, elephant-headed Ganesh, or Ganesha, is one of Hinduisms most popular deities. He is the remover of obstacles, the deity whom worshippers first acknowledge when they visit a temple. He is also patron of letters and of learning; he is the legendary scribe who, using his broken tusk, which he often holds, wrote down parts of the Mahabharata epic.

I love Ganesh. My first experience with him was hilarious. I was charged with setting up a retreat for a number of VIP’s in Santa Fe New Mexico. Another office assistant and I were sent several days in advance to make sure everything was PERFECT.
Of course there were many glitches – the first thing we heard was that we had inadvertantly booked our VIPs on a flight that just-so-happened to be carrying the arch-enemy batch of VIPs to – where else – Santa Fe.
    Oops.
The second glitch was that the big boss’ ex-wife just so happened to be on vacation and staying at the hotel we booked him (and his new girlfriend)into – double Ooops.
What followed were an inordinate number of these small, inconvenient oopses that people in my job are supposed to anticipate and evaporate. A bit of background here: my predecessor was once fired because the butter at an important dinner meeting was all wrong – yes, she was rehired after the boss had his tantrum and apologized – but still, this was the kind of drama we feared and dreaded.

I had just bought a CD on healing mantras and had listened only to the first part on seed sounds. The only sound I could recall was “Gum” – the seed sound for the remover of obstacles. The other assistant was in an equal panic over the pace of unlucky developments that we would be held accountable for – enough so that when I suggested we chant she readily agreed – and so we “gum – gum – gum -ed …” together in the car riding around Santa Fe New Mexico booking tours, scheduling entertainment, picking out lavish menus, anticipating hangnails, and generally providing for men and women who have everything, including power and money…
So, they arrived in one big oddly blissful bunch – chalk it up to the thin air or the magic of Santa Fe, but they were relaxed and entirely ready to be pleased with everything.
This was absolutely unprecedented. None of the “problems” seemed to be problems at all – not even to the most demanding individuals – and my friend and I were complimented at a ridiculous rate on how expertly and tastefully the retreat had been orchestrated. My co-hort, who had never said a mantra in her life, was thoroughly convinced – over the years we have giggled over the whole weird excursion. I often evoke Ganesh to this day, but find his energy most helpful when I look at the obstacles in my thinking that are creating my reality. Good luck with this project!

I have used that same seed sound mantra too. “GUM”. Several years ago I was asked to do a Medicine Wheel ceremony at a friend’s house, only to discover that he had invited about 200 people to come.

At the same time, I had learned a whole new way of presenting and “doing” medicine wheel ceremony. It was something I had never done before, and suddenly 200 people were invited. I was in a panic. Overwhelmed by anxiety.

About a week before the Medicine Wheel was scheduled, I still had no idea as to how I was going to do it. My sister suggested that I use a Ganesh Mantra, she told it to me, but I couldn’t keep a coherent thought in my head and had to settle on using the “seed sound” instead. It worked like a charm.

Every time I felt anxiety, or started to fret and worry, I started the mantra again. “gum, gum, gum” The whole thing unfolded without a hitch, the people that came had deep life changing experiences, and I found that I had walked into a whole new level of Medicine Wheel experience.

I can’t wait to try this for an entire 30 days.
