Taking Action

Thought is the creative power, or the impelling force which causes the creative power to act; thinking in a Certain Way will bring riches to you, but you must not rely upon thought alone, paying no attention to personal action. That is the rock upon which many otherwise scientific metaphysical thinkers meet shipwreck – the failure to connect thought with personal action.

By thought you can cause the gold in the hearts of the mountains to be impelled toward you; but it will not mine itself, refine itself, coin itself into double eagles, and come rolling along the roads seeking its way into your pocket.

Your pocketbook is not going to be transformed in to a Fortunatus’s purse which shall always be full of money, without effort on your part.

This is the crucial point in the science of getting rich; right here, where thought and personal action must be combined. There are very many people who, consciously or unconsciously, set the creative forces in action by the strength and persistence of their desires, but who remain poor because they do not provide for the reception of the thing they want when it comes.

By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it.

From The Science of Getting Rich
by Wallace D. Wattles.

I suppose it’s kind of like having an apple orchard. You plant the trees, the weather cooperates, and eventually there are apples. But unless you harvest and use them, they are just bird food. And if you aren’t ready to go out and get them when they are ripe, and if you don’t can, cook, eat, or sell them, those apples will still end up being bird food.

One Response to Taking Action

I think this is where the whole thing breaks down for me. And I feel that it is partly due to me not having some basic “how to” knowledge.

I would be the person who sweated bullets over an apple orchard, and worked hard and long until the trees were healthy and the apples were starting to form.

Then I would be overcome with exhaustion, and suddenly I would realize that I should have went out and got them LAST WEEK, and so I would run out and start gathering up the remaining apples that are good, and I would bring them in and think to myself, “ok, tomorrow I will….”

And then several weeks later, I’d be throwing out the rotten apples and saying mean things to myself about how I should of… and could of… etc etc.

Alternatively, I might do really well the first year, and maybe even the second year, but by the third year, I would be sick and tired of apples and making plans to grow artichokes instead.

Shirley, you are too funny. I also have felt this way! Maybe it boils down to “You can’t do it alone!” Maybe we all need help, and need to practice asking for and receiving help graciously. One person cannot run an apple orchard alone. If the person asks their friends to help, and everyone reaps the benefits, there surely will be more than enough to go around, and no one will be exhausted, and everyone will still have time to go see a movie at the end of the day. And when everyone is done with the apples, they can decide to grow artichokes later if they want! 🙂

That’s it! I think you are absolutely right! I am always doing things alone.. for my whole life.

I think today I am going to really spiff up the “helpful friends” area of my house. (Unfortunately it’s a bathroom… lol.. imagine that…) I’ll try some cures from our Feng Shui project. And I’ll try to think of ways to utilize the “group” effect.

Now that I think about it, my plumbing experience would have been so much more fun if I had organized a “plumbing” party, with beer, movies, and music…

Shirley, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who says “tomorrow I will” and then realize 3 weeks later that it’s too late! And Melissa, I agree that whatever the endeavor, it’s a whole lot easier to be successful if you are willing to ask for and receive help!

I’m going to try to be more reliable at putting thoughts into action, as well as asking for and receiving help! I don’t want to have to deal with anymore of those darn rotten apples!
