Clean and Clear

A Quick Fix

Declutter activity for today:

Find at least five items that are broken, chipped, in some sort of disrepair, that deep down you truly know you are never going to fix, and throw them in the trash.

This could include ratty towels, chipped dishes, coffee mugs with the handles broken off, broken children’s toys, pantyhose with runs, paperback books with the cover ripped off, broken lamps or chairs, old musty curtains, costume jewelry with missing gemstones, anything that you are holding onto for nostalgic reasons, or that you keep telling yourself “I will get around to fixing it someday.”

Don’t guilt trip yourself. Don’t “should” yourself. Just release it. Get rid of at least five items so you can free up that emotional and physical space. This should take less than five minutes. Do it for you!

That’s it. Now let’s get on to the fun stuff in our day!

A Quickie

Take a quick look around your home. What area bothers you the most? Which area is the most cluttered? In which area do you feel the most uncomfortable?

Set your timer for 5 minutes. In this area, do a quick tidy-up: put any dirty clothes in the laundry; throw away any trash; put toys away; gather up unopened mail and magazines and put them in a basket or box so they are all contained in one place. Any item that is out of place that bothers you – pick it up and put it away or throw it away! After 5 minutes, stop. That’s it for today!

This idea is from our very own Melissa.

Undergarment Boogie

Declutter activity for today:

Run to your underwear drawer and find the gross, granny-panty, holey underthings that you keep crammed in the drawer for emergencies.

  • Pull them out.

Do you have any old shapeless, stretched-out, no-support-left bras?

  • Pull those out too.

What about single socks whose mates have long since abandoned them?

  • Gather them all up and THROW THEM IN THE TRASH!

This should take no more than 5 minutes.

You are a divine creature and you should clothe yourself in a manner befitting your position in the universe. Your undergarments are the foundation of your image.

3 Minutes To Fame and Fortune

We are working to clear out the items in our Fame section that have a connotation of something that doesn’t represent who you want to be.

Take a minute to really look at your Fame area and pinpoint the items that don’t belong here, the things that don’t represent the person you are working to become.

Set your timer for 3 minutes. Move as quickly as possible and throw away the items that belong in the trash, and put the other items in a box to be redistributed to the appropriate rooms when you have time. After 3 minutes, stop! You are done for today. Let’s move on to the fun stuff!

Hot Spot Fire Drill

Our declutter activity for today is the:
Hot Spot Fire Drill

Remember, clutter consists of things that do not bring you joy, you do not love, or you don’t need.

Clutter is disorganized. Clutter keeps you living in the past. Clutter makes you embarrassed and ashamed. Clutter does not allow your mind and body to rest. Clutter tells you that you are not worthy. Clutter never wants you to leave home. Clutter has to be conquered! Release your clutter and find the things you are searching for.

Find the Hot Spot in the area we are working in today.

A Hot Spot is an area that, if left unattended, will gradually and insidiously take over your home. It may seem under control but it really isn’t. When you walk into a room, the Hot Spot is the first thing you see. Clutter attracts more clutter. Whenever you catch yourself saying, “I can put this here and do it later”, you have created a “Hot Spot.” We are going to stop this Hot Spot from becoming a raging clutter inferno.

Set your timer for 3 minutes. Survey your Hot Spot in the area for today and put away the items have just been left out. That’s all! At the end of three minutes, stop. We are done decluttering for today.

Five Minute Room Rescue

Isn’t this a cool picture? I was looking for a High Five to decorate our five minute room rescue and came up with this. It seems appropriate since squirrels are so busy, and we are too.

Declutter activity for today:
The Five-Minute Room Rescue

In the Prosperity area of your home, set your timer for 5 minutes.

Move as fast as you can and remove all items that do not belong in this area – take the dirty dishes to the kitchen sink, put the dirty clothes in the laundry pile, pick up all the books, magazines, and piles of papers and mail and put them in a basket or at least contain them all in one area in the house – but not in the Prosperity area!

After 5 minutes, stop. You’re done decluttering for today.

27 Things Find a New Home

Declutter activity for today:
The 27-Fling Boogie for items that need to find a new home

Grab a trash bag or a box and run through the house as fast as you can and grab 27 items that you do not love, need, or use. These items are clutter and they need to find a new home. Once you’ve filled the bag with 27 items to give away, either immediately take it to a charity drop-off location, or put it in your car to drop off THIS WEEK.

Or, if you think the items are saleable, our Prosperity Group will hold a garage sale when the weather gets a little warmer. If you do not have room for the bag or if you think you will nostalgically look through the bag at a later date and gradually re-clutter your home, email Shirley or Melissa and we will make arrangements to store the items elsewhere for you until the garage sale. The money from the garage sale will be used to do something fun for our group!

One other option is to sign up for Freecycle at Yahoo Groups. Freecycle allows you to list items you want to give away so someone who needs them can come get them from you for free.

Again, move through today’s decluttering as quickly as possible so we can get to the fun stuff!

27 Fling Boogie

Some thoughts on clutter from Sink Reflections by Marla Cilley:

  • Are you living in CHAOS? (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome?)
  • Clutter affects you mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.
  • Clutter is the enemy of feng shui. Clutter causes the chi (energy) of your home to stagnate.

Clutter steals your money! You know you own a specific item, but you cannot find it when you need it, so you’re forced to run out and buy another.

Clutter steals your time, energy, and sanity! How much money do you spend each year trying to “organize” and manage your clutter? How much time do you invest?

Clutter cannot be organized! Evict your clutter and breathe a sigh of relief!

Today, we are doing the “27-Fling Boogie!”

  • Grab a trash bag and run through the house as fast as you can and dispose of 27 items.
  • Put the bag in the trash.
  • Do not look through it.
  • Don’t re-clutter your home – De-Clutter!

The point is to do this as quickly as possible so we are not spending more time than necessary decluttering and we can get to the fun stuff in our day.

Alternatively, you could visit The Plan , a nifty little website I found that handles the various problems and issues associated with “disposophobia”. This is what they had to say:

DISPOSOPHOBIA The Fear of Getting Rid of Stuff..

People who suffer from maladies such as depression or obsessive compulsive disorders often end up buying things, bringing them home and dropping them. Rather than looking for what they own, they simply go out and buy more and do the same thing…..over and over and over again.

We call this behavior….. Shop ‘n Drop.

This is only one of the many issues that we address and provide solutions. The Plan for you or a loved one’s recovery can be found at 1 800 THE PLAN. Recovery could be just days away…call 1-800-THE PLAN to schedule an appraisal.

Out with the old

besom-enchantedworksIf you think deeply about the start of any period of bad luck, you will find that there is some object that you acquired round about then or that you used or wore quite a lot. Maybe it is something that brings back recollections of an unhappy event. It can be an ornament, an item of clothing, a photograph, or even a kitchen utensil.

Place the said object near the back door of the house. Then, using a broom, and starting at the top of the house or in the room furthest from the back door, sweep each room in turn, working in a counter clockwise direction. As you work, visualize darkness being swept away in front of you. The darkness is black heavy clouds of bad luck. It can’t resist your broom. While you sweep, say,

“I banish the dark clouds from my home, bad luck be gone, there is no place here for you. Be gone, be gone, be gone!”

Any dust can be swept on to a shovel and taken with you as you go. Do each room in turn until you reach the back door, then put all the sweepings into a bag outside. Take the object previously mentioned and break or tear it, venting all your anger and frustration. Put the pieces into the bag with the dust. Sprinkle the contents with salt, saying,

“By this salt, cleansing gift of the earth, I render you powerless.”

Now bury the bag. If it is at all possible, bury it at a crossroads or by running water, but if this is not practical bury it in the garden or at the bottom of the rubbish bin. Before covering the bag with earth, or rubbish, sprinkle it with salt, making a pattern of a cross within a circle, saying,

“By this salt, by this sign you are gone from my life.”

Now reversing the order of the rooms, from the back door to the top of the house walk round each room clockwise with a lighted candle, preferably colored pink or gold, and a lighted incense stick perfumed amber or rose (or a scent that you really love). Alternatively if there is a particular perfume (or essential oil) that makes you feel happy, use that. As you walk, say,

“I bring light, joy, luck, and love into every corner of my home and life.”

Visualize each room being filled with bright golden light, every corner bursting with hope and joy. When you have done, return to the room most often used and leave the candle and incense to burn out naturally. Take time to enjoy the new feeling of happiness filling your home.

Silver and Sugar

d410a_roman-silver-spoon

Fill a silver spoon with sugar, and carry it around the house in a counter clockwise direction.

The silver spoon will banish negativity, and the sugar will empower and sweeten your opportunities. Leave the spoon undisturbed for seven hours, and then cast the sugar to the winds, asking for speedy, positive changes in your life.
