Antahkarana – Ancient Symbol of Healing

Alice Bailey and several other authors of Tibetan philosophy have some knowledge of the Antahkarana which you can find in a number of books. They describe the Antahkarana as a part of spiritual anatomy. It is the connection between the physical brain and the Higher Self. It is this connection that must heal and develop if we are to grow spiritually. The Antahkarana symbol depicted and described here represents this connection and activates it whenever you are in its presence.

The science of Radionics indicates that lines drawn on paper create a psychic effect on the space surrounding the drawing and will influence the human aura and chakras in various ways depending on the pattern created. This validates the age-old practice of yantra meditation which makes use of visual images to purify and evolve the consciousness.

The Antahkarana is an ancient healing and meditation symbol that has been used in Tibet and China for thousands of years. It is a powerful symbol and simply by having it in your presence, it will create a positive affect on the chakras and aura.

When doing healing work, it focuses and deepens the actions of the healing energies involved. When meditating with the symbol on your person or close by, it automatically creates what the Taoists call the great microcosmic orbit wherein spiritual energies travel up the spine, over the crown chakra, then down through the front of the body to the root chakra and back up again continuously moving around and around. This action balances the chakras and prevents too much energy building up in one or more chakras.

The Anthakarana symbol will also neutralize negative energy that has collected in objects such as jewelry or crystals simply by placing the object between two symbols. In addition, it will enhance all healing work including Reiki, Mahikari, Jin Shin, Polarity Therapy, Chiropractic, Hypnotherapy, and Past Life Regression. These positive effects have been confirmed over and over by the improved results noted by those using the symbol and by clairvoyent observation by those trained in sensing changes in the aura and chakras.

This symbol is multi-dimensional. From one perspective it appears to be two dimensional, being made-up of three sevens on a flat surface. The three sevens represent the seven chakras, the seven colors and the seven tones of the musical scale. These three sevens are mentioned in the book of Revelations as the seven candle sticks, the seven trumpets and the seven seals.

From another perspective this symbol appears as a three dimensional cube. Its energy moves up from two to three dimensions that can be seen and continues up through unseen dimensions all the way to the highest dimension – the dimension of the Higher-Self.

Activating The Reiki

Reiki is a very easy healing technique to use. After receiving the Reiki attunement, all that is necessary to start Reiki flowing is to request it to do so. Just ask or intend that it begin to flow and it will.

This can be done simply by saying the work “Reiki” to yourself at the beginning of a healing session. Reiki is always ready to flow and it will do so whenever you want it to. Simply placing your hands on someone with the intention of giving a treatment will be enough to start it flowing.

It is not necessary to meditate or concentrate, or go into an altered state to use Reiki. Reiki flows so easily that just thinking or talking about it turns it on. In fact, as I am writing this section, I feel my Reiki flowing simply because I am thinking about it.

When giving a treatment it is important to keep your fingers together. This will concentrate the energy and create a stronger flow.

You can talk with the client, or others and Reiki will flow. However, it flows more freely if you focus your awareness on the Reiki, allowing your consciousness to merge with it. Be aware of the sensations in your hands such as warmth, tingling, vibrations, pulsations or a flow of energy.

You may also feel Reiki flowing through other parts of your body. As you dwell on Reiki, your mind will begin to be aware of the consciousness of Reiki. You may experience this as feelings of joy, love, well-being, security, upliftment, unlimited potential, freedom, creativity, beauty, balance, harmony, and other positive states.

Allow these feelings to become your feelings. If other thoughts come up, gently brush them away, and bring your attention back to the consciousness of Reiki. As you do this not only will you be allowing Reiki to flow more strongly, you will also be receiving a deep healing.

By meditating on the consciousness of Reiki, you will also be entering a state of mind that allows Spirit to work more closely with you. You will be a clearer channel for the Reiki.

The most important way to increase the effectiveness of Reiki is to come from love, compassion, and kindness. This will create a feeling of emotional safety for the client, encouraging them to more fully accept the Reiki energy. It will open the doors to your healing potential, increasing the strength of your Reiki and it is also very healthy for you!

The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me
what you do for a living.
I want to know
what you ache for
and if you dare to dream
of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me
how old you are.
I want to know
if you will risk
looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me
what planets are
squaring your moon...
I want to know
if you have touched
the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened
by life’s betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know
if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know
if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you
to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations
of being human.

It doesn’t interest me
if the story you are telling me
is true.

I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear
the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know
if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live
or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me
who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me
where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know
what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know
if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like
the company you keep
in the empty moments.

A Brief History of Reiki

Reiki (ray-key) is a natural healing technique that makes use of the laying-on of hands. Thought to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago, Reiki was re-discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist in the 1800’s. It was his purpose to find how Buddha healed the sick.

During his 10 year quest he studied the teachings of Christ, and the sacred literature of Japan, China, India, and Tibet. At the end of his quest the complete system of Reiki came to him during a mystical experience on the Holy Mountain of Kuriyama in Japan.

Mikao Usui initiated sixteen masters, one of whom was Chujiro Hayashi.

At the age of 47 Dr. Hayashi received Reiki teacher training from Usui Sensei. For about ten years he ran a Reiki clinic. During those ten years he came up with a more complicated set of hand positions and divided the Reiki training into three levels or degrees.

Hayashi initiated thirteen masters, one of whom was Mrs Takata. After being healed from serious conditions in Dr. Hayashi’s clinic, Mrs. Takata decided to learn Reiki. She spent at least a year working for Dr. Hayashi in his clinic before receiving the second-degree training. In 1938, she received her teacher training from Dr. Hayashi.

Hawayo Takata features prominantly in Reiki history as the master who brought Reiki to the western world. She lived in Hawaii and before her death in the 1970’s, taught 22 Reiki masters. Most of the Reiki that we know and love in the western world comes through the Takata lineage.

Joshin Kokyuu-Ho

Breathing technique to purify the spirit.

This technique magnifies your Reiki energy and helps you feel like a piece of hollow bamboo – a clear channel for energy. When practicing this, you will realize that energy does not belong to us. It is simply the all-pervading force that makes everything pulsate with life.

With practice, you will find that the forces you thought to be your own personal energy melt and merge with the cosmic energy within your body-mind system. Then it becomes exceedingly difficult to draw the line between where the universe ends and “I” begin.

Preliminary exercise:

  • Stand in a comfortable position, feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Take a few deep breaths.
  • Release all the tension in your body and think of something pleasant.
  • Let your mouth open slightly.
  • Breathe in through your nose.
  • Rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth as you inhale.
  • Exhale through your mouth, and let your tongue come down naturally as you do this.
  • Bend your knees in slow motion while focusing your attention on your lower abdomen.
  • Do each step very, very slowly.

Suddenly you will become aware of a point in your lower abdomen, 2 or 3 fingers below the navel. It is where your life force dwells, the center of your being. This is called the Tanden.

Now begin the main exercise:

It may help to put one or both of your hands on your lower abdomen and breathe into the spot you are touching.

  • Inhale through your nose, and imagine drawing Reiki energy into your body through your crown chakra.
  • Pull the energy down to your Tanden.
  • When the energy reaches your Tanden, keep the energy there for a few seconds without straining yourself.
  • Visualize how this breath is expanding and permeating your entire body.
  • Then exhale through your mouth and imagine the energy flowing out through your fingertips, your hand chakras, the tips of your toes and your foot chakras.

Continue for 5 or 10 minutes.

The Gassho Meditation

Gassho Meiso

Gassho means “two hands coming together.” Dr. Usui called this technique the first pillar of Reiki and he practiced it twice a day. It is also mentioned on Dr. Usui’s memorial stone where it states:

” Mornings and evenings, sit in the Gassho position and repeat these words (the Reiki Ideals) out loud and in your heart.”

This is a special meditation to attune one to the spirit of Reiki. It is done as a regular meditation every day. It clears the mind, opens the heart and other chakras, and strengthens your Reiki energy. A wonderful stillness will develop inside along with the awareness of increased inner peace.

This meditation can be done standing or sitting. It is done for 15 to 30 minutes per session.

  • Close your eyes.
  • Fold your hands in the prayer position with your fingers pointing up and your thumbs touching the heart chakra at the middle of your chest.
  • Focus all your attention on the point where your middle fingers meet, and forget everything else.
  • If thoughts arise, acknowledge them and then gently brush them aside and refocus on the point where your middle fingers are touching.

As you continue to practice, you will find that you can hold your attention on the middle fingers for a longer and longer period of time without thoughts arising

It is important to accept that thoughts will arise. When this happens, do not think you have made a mistake as this is completely normal. However as soon as you realize you are focusing on a thought, gently refocus back on the point where your middle fingers touch.

When you have reached the end of meditation, take a couple of deep breaths, bring your attention to your eyes, and open your eyes slowly.

The Principles of Reiki

While Reiki is not a religion, for optimum well being in the light of Eastern medical theory that we are a mind-body-spirit unity, it is necessary to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired.

The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system.

The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

Coping With Cleansing

Accept everything about yourself ~ I mean everything. You are you and that is the beginning and the end. No apologies, no regrets.

~Clark Moustakas

Do self-treatment every day, and be sure to drink six to eight glasses of pure water daily. This does not include tea, coffee, or any other water-based beverage.

Soak in a hot tub with 2 cups of Epsom Salts dissolved in the water. This facilitates the release of toxins, and will absolutely help you feel better.

It may also be useful to repeat the Reiki Principles to yourself:

Just for today do not anger.
Just for today do not worry.
Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show your gratitude to every living thing.

Living “just for today” you focus on the “NOW”. Anger and fear are replaced by love as your vibratory rate and consciousness are raised. But the shift is not always without pain or letting go of old patterns. In Reiki we call this releasing of old patterns, the 21 Day Clearing Process.

You will be lifted even higher when the transformation is complete. You may not recognize the new “You” at first, but trust me, you will never want to go back to that Old Self again.

Is the ability to channel Reiki ever lost?

The following question was taken from a lecture given by Hawayo Takata in 1975 which was held at the Trinity Metaphysical Center in Redwood City, CA. Reverend Beth Gray, pastor of the center, presented questions from an audience compiled entirely of Takata’s Reiki students.

Reverend Beth Gray: “If, for some reason one fails to do Reiki for a period of a month or so, does one lose the power?”

Hawayo Takata: “That’s a good question. No. Once you have the contact … through me … and that is everybody who is here. (see note below) Reiki stays with you everlasting. But, it may, it may not, when you are tired, have the full charge come out at one time. You will become quiet, because your battery down here has run down.

So, what do you do to yourself? One, and Two, and Three, and Four (the first four positions of the first Reiki pattern). Your Foundation Treatment (the first four positions) has to be done so that you recharge your own battery. And when that is finished … and then when you try to treat people, your energy goes up, because you are filled, you are not empty.

A lady that was … had no children, learned Reiki and she treated her husband, who was a professor of a university, and in a few months he got well. And they decided that Reiki was wonderful. His vitality was high. He was treating himself. She was treating herself. But actually, she did not have any patient, or did not work on anybody for seven years.

And one morning, when she was going to town, a seven-year-old boy was on his way to school, and when he got at the train station he ran out of the train and then he slipped on the platform. And when he slipped on the platform … this was winter … cold … and he began to have bleeding nose, bleeding nose. And this woman, out of kindness, she said, ‘Oh, how very, very unfortunate that this little youngster got hurt.’ And so she ran to him, and she pinched his nose, and treated the back of the nape of the neck for stopping the bleeding nose.

Just because this was an accident she didn’t have to go through the performance of One, Two, Three, Four, but it was an acute accident … happen now, so she went right to the nose and stopped the bleeding. And she was so happy about this result. So, she stopped on her way to, this place of, to the studio of Reiki Center and she made her report, saying that, ‘I still have Reiki after seven years of no use.’ And so she said, ‘I believe that Reiki is everlasting.’

Reiki is everlasting. There’s only one way you can lose and that is, I have said and I have warned you, that no matter how great you become or what an expert in treating and healing, that you cannot teach unless, you go up to the higher degrees. What you have learned is the First Degree. But, with the First Degree it is good enough to give you protection and also you can help yourself and others.”

Note:

At the time of this lecture, Hawayo Takata was the only Reiki Master teaching in the West; hence her response, “Once you have the contact (attunement) … through me…and that is everybody who is here …”
