Casting the Norns

The Norns are the Norse goddesses of fate. Urdh was the goddess of the past, or what has been. Verdhandi is the goddess of the present, what is. Skuld is the goddess of the future, or what shall be. Fate or wyrd was a very important factor in the psychology of the ancients.

A Norns cast is very simple, consisting of three runes, drawn one at a time from the rune pouch and laid in a row. If face down, flip them over as if turning the pages of a book.

The first rune represents the past of the situation in question. The second indicates the present, the path that the querier is currently on. The third suggests the future, a likely outcome if one continues on the present path.

A short summary of the meanings and interpretations of each Rune stone can be found here. A nice tutorial on creating your own set of Rune Stones can be found at the Magickal Apothecary.

Dream Oracle Doll

This method, which resembles something from a fairy tale, traditionally uses a mandrake root, though ginseng, carrot, or any root that suggests a human form may be substituted.

  • Embellish and dress the root so it looks like a person. (German folk tradition suggests using millet for eyes.)
  • Wrap the root doll in silk when not in use and keep in a safe place.
  • Unwrap the doll and talk to it before bedtime. Tell it your concerns and questions.
  • Perch it on your pillow or tuck it beneath while you go to sleep and dream.

Bay Leaf Divination

The oracle at Daphne, near Tarsus was obtained by dipping bay leaves or branches into a sacred spring, and bay leaves remain an ingredient of many magic spells and a tool for divination. Here’s a simple bay leaf divination spell that doesn’t require a magical spring.

Concentrate on your question while holding bay leaves in your hand. Then either place a single bay leaf onto a lit charcoal or toss a few leaves into an open fire.

If the leaves crackle loudly and burn brightly, the prognosis is positive. If leaves sputter, refuse to burn, or, worse, all flames die out, consider postponing or adjusting your plans. If flames shoot straight from the bay leaves, the signs are auspicious; all powers and blessings are with you.

Consulting The Library Angel

I’ve consulted the “library angel” at home, in libraries all over the world, in bookstores, and with friends’ books for many years. I suggest you begin at home next to your own bookshelf, where you’ll have the most privacy.

Begin by relaxing and then quieting your mind. Focus on your intent and address the magical portals into divine wisdom that are before you by acknowledging their power and their role, for example:

“I invite the numinous spirit that resides within these volumes to guide my hand, and my inquiry. Please help me find wisdom.”

Close your eyes. Allow your hand to move freely back and forth, up and down in front of the books. Allow your hand to move freely, while keeping your eyes closed. When the moment is right, you will feel a gentle pull toward the bookcase. You may feel a sudden sense of certainty as your hand is guided to the volume you are meant to work with. Pull it from the shelf. Hold it to your heart and say:

“I acknowledge you as my guide.”

Now recite your question aloud.

Allow the book to open in your hands. Open your eyes and let them light upon the page. Read what is before you.

It may take time to meditate upon the answer you have received, or the message may be absolutely clear immediately. You may ask for clarification if you need to, but don’t ask the same question twice.

Write down the passage your received and even if it does not seem immediately meaningful, let it evoke feelings. And end the divination by giving thanks to the book, the library angel, and the Divine for their assistance.

Three Mothers Tarot Divination

The Three Mothers (Maiden, Mother, Crone) are not just symbols of the cycles of growth upon the Earth, they also represent phases we physically go through, cycles of events within our lives.

Sometimes we are uncertain as to where we actually are in a cycle of events. This can be frustrating and depressing. We may have to endure until the completion of the cycle, but it’s comforting to have some idea of where you are in that cycle. If you are observant, wise enough to seek guidance, and willing to make changes, however painful, you can often shorten the cycle.

This divination ritual (which uses tarot cards) is best done during the waxing or Full Moon, but in a pinch can be performed any time. If performed during a Crescent Moon, it will predominantly point out the root beginnings of the cycle, possibly what started the events in motion. The Full Moon will tell you how the events went, or will go, during the height of the happenings. The Dark Moon reveals the outcome or ending of the cycle.

Spread a nice cloth on a table where you can sit and spread out your tarot cards. Light a white candle on each side of your working area. Burn a good divination incense. If you use charcoal and a burner, add mugwort to the incense. Sit for a few moments with the tarot cards in your hands. Breathe out all negatives, and breathe in positive energies.

Shuffle the cards three, six, or nine times, while thinking strongly about the cycle of events you wish clarified. Six and nine are multiples of three and therefore powerful. Divide the deck into three piles from left to right. Tap each pile three times with your fingers and chant:

One for the Maiden, free as the air;
One for the Mother, lovely and fair;
One for the Wise One, in her dark hall;
Harken, Great Ladies! Listen to my call.

Turn up the top card on the left-hand pile. Think carefully about it, as this card represents what set the cycle in motion. Turn up the top card on the center pile; this symbolizes the full-blown activity of the cycle. Turn up the top card on the right-hand pile; this is the ending, the winding down of the cycle. From these three cards you should be able to determine where you are in the cycle of events.

If you feel you can endure through the rest of the cycle, you need do nothing further. If, however, you wish to change or end the cycle, you will need spiritual guidance as to which steps to take. In this case, turn up another card on each pile, moving from the left to the right. These revealed cards should give you clues as to what action, if any, to take.

It is a good idea to make a note of the cards you turned up, in their proper order. In this way you can think about the things you need to do or change, and refer back to it if you have questions, or as things begin to unfold.

Picking a Suitor

blue-moonlight-sizedIf you have a number of suitors and wish to find which one is best for you, there is a ritual that may be done at night when the moon is shining. Draw a large circle on a sheet of paper and write the names of your admirers anywhere within the circumference. Take up the paper in your left hand, and hold a needle in your right hand. Facing the moon, close your eyes and stab the needle into the paper.

The name closest to the hole made by the needle is the one who is best for you. If the hole actually posses through the name – so that moonlight flows through the hole and, therefore, through the name – then that person will be the very best match for you.

Note:
This divination method can be modified for use whenever you are unsure of your choices. Simply write the choices on the paper and follow the above instructions.
