Divination with Metals and Stones
This system is based on the concept that your connection with a particular stone or metal at times during your life reflects your need for its specific energy on the direction of your path.
Ancient diviners had splendid collections of stones and metals that they had the querist (the person questing for information) choose from. Today we may make our own collections, using samples found on our journey. It is not necessary to have fabulous, expensive stones and metal samples – rough uncut forms work quite effectively.
You may have the querist select three or four in order of preference, or just one to use for a specific question. You might also have them pick one for past, one to represent present, and one for future. If you work with the stones every day, you will begin to find your own best way to utilize them.
After a stone or metal has been selected, you might ask why that one seemed attractive in regard to the issue being discussed. If you do this before you interpret, you will find it amazing how many times the querist already “knows” the property of the stone and has chosen the exact one most needed at that time. You might also advise the querist to obtain a similar stone for use as a totem.
Traditional Meanings of Stones:
- Amethyst: Rich stone of love, good fortune, and positive spiritual magick. Can indicate a new spiritual awakening.
- Coral: Strong protection against all kinds of personal misfortunes. Can indicate deep emotional turbulence.
- Diamond: Strong attraction to power, luxury, and wealth; also attracts friendships. Can indicate the strengthening of a relationship.
- Emerald: Powerful stone for one’s present inner vision and psychic abilities. Can indicate negativity being averted.
- Garnet: Stone of honesty, truth, purity, and compassionate benevolence. Can indicate overactive selflessness.
- Jade: Sacred balancing stone for overall harmony and personal power. Can indicate a need for spiritual serenity.
- Lapis Lazuli: Stone of connection to the spiritual realms, between the worlds. Can indicate strong spirit guides are present.
- Moonstone: Stone of gentle passions and faithful supportive love. Can indicate a need for greater receptivity.
- Opal: Somewhat tricky stone of mystical attunement and perceptive gifts. Can indicate superstitious beliefs.
- Ruby: Regal stone of one’s present loyalty, faith, and powerful courage. Can indicate the quest of a spiritual warrior.
- Sapphire: Powerful stone of synthesis, peace, harmony, and healing. Can indicate a need for magical studies.
- Topaz: Active stone of protection, focus, and achievement of goals. Can indicate a need for self-confidence.
- Turquoise: Soothing stone of personal peace, Nature wisdom, ideals. Can indicate scattered energies.
Traditional Meanings of Metals
- Aluminum: Ingenuity, perception, creativity, and practical materialism. Can indicate a career change.
- Copper: Self-healing abilities, inspirational gifts, friendly nature. Can indicate a need for flexibility.
- Iron: Protective nature, strong supportive tendencies, willfulness. Can indicate possessiveness and pride.
- Lead: Mystical tasks to be achieved, karmic debts to be balanced. Can indicate piety and martyrdom.
- Silver: Receptivity, emotionality, psychic gifts, projecting power. Can indicate a secretive nature.
- Tin: Friendliness, expansiveness, joyful tasks present, positive outlook. Can indicate an overactive ego.
Notes:
The same meanings and significances apply if a specific stone or metal shows up unexpectedly in your own life, or if you feel a particular draw to a stone or metal.

New Moon Marriage Divination
When the Moon is New, braid your hair or some kind of string while saying:
I braid this knot, this knot I braid,
To know the think I know not yet,
That while I sleep I plain may see
The man (woman) that shall husband (wife) be,

Divinatory Wands – Pow Wow Style
From Pow-Wows, or Long Lost Friend, by John George Hoffman, [1820], we have this tutorial on how to make a divining wand to be used for finding iron, ore, or water.
To make a wand for searching for iron, ore, or water:
On the first night of Christmas, between 11 and 12 o’clock, break off from any tree a young twig of one year’s growth, in the three highest names (Father. Son. and Holy Ghost), at the same time facing toward sunrise. Whenever you apply this wand in searching for anything apply it three times. The twig must be forked, and each end of the fork must be held in one hand, so that the third and thickest part of it stands up, but do not hold it too tight. Strike the ground with the thickest end, and that which you desire will appear immediately, if there is any in the ground where you strike. The words to be spoken when the wand is thus applied are as follows:
Archangel Gabriel,
I conjure thee in the name of God, the Almighty, to tell me,
is there any water here or not? do tell me!

Words to be spoken while making Divinatory Wands:
In making divinatory wands, they must be broken as before directed, and while breaking and before using them, the following words must be spoken:
Divining rod, do thou keep that power,
Which God gave unto thee at the very first hour.
Note: when you see this symbol + + + it means that you would then make the sign of the cross three times.
Dark Moon Divination
To have a question answered, or to ask about your life in general, perform this ritual on the Dark Moon night. You will need the following:
- Black Candle
- Incense
- Tarot Cards and./or Rune Stones
- Wand (or something to serve as a wand)
Take a ritual cleansing bath and dress in a dark robe or go naked. Cast your circle as usual, or at least bless salt and sprinkle it around your working area. Light a black candle on each side of the altar. Have ready an appropriate incense. Place your tarot cards or rune stones in the center of the altar. Lay your wand beside the cards. Stand with your arms outstretched and say:
The cycle of the Moon has turned once more.
The Moon hides her light from the uninitiated.
Those who follow the Ancient Paths know that her power
is not gone, is not diminished.
The wisdom of the Dark Mother is there for all who truly seek her.
Tap the altar three times with your wand:
Hear me, O Carrier of Wisdom.
My voice flies through the night to you.
Show me new pathways I must tread
To change my life and make it new.
Light the incense and lift it high over the altar:
I bring an offering, fine and fair.
The scent will rise upon the air
To reach your realms. Bless me soon,
O Lady of the Darkened Moon.
Tap the cards or rune bag three times with the wand, then circle them clockwise three times with the wand. Tap them three more times, to equal the number nine, a Moon number. Lay the wand aside and shuffle the cards or stir the runes.
Divide the cards into three piles, moving from left to right; or lay our three runes in the same pattern. The left pile is the past; the middle the present; the right the future.
Turn up the top card on each pile and contemplate what you see. Be open even if you don’t understand the message. It will become clear later. Turn up a second card on each pile and think about what you see. Then do this a third time. What was not clear with the first card will probably be clarified with the others.
If you want to use both tarot and runes, turn up the first round of cards. Then choose a rune stone and lay that next to each upturned card. Finally turn up the second round of cards.
This also works with more than one tarot deck or type of card deck. For example you might use a standard tarot deck, the Medicine Cards, and Star-Gate cards.
Write down what has been revealed to you. In this way you will be better able to remember and understand when things begin to happen at a later date.

Selenomancy – What is it?
Selenomancy, like most divinatory systems, is quite ancient, and has been practiced since time immemorial by the Babylonians, Scythians, Greeks, and Arabians, among others. It is the art and practice of divination by the observation of the phases and appearances of the moon.
There are countless moon-related omens that have evolved since prehistoric times. Our celestial companion has long been used to divine the fate of individuals at the time of their birth.
For example:
- A child born when the moon is one day old will be blessed with wealth and longevity.
- A child born during the moon’s waning phase signifies that the child will be unhealthy.
- A child born while the moon is full will be a very strong individual.
- A child born during the dark of the moon will need special care and will probably die before reaching puberty.
Different methods of Selenomancy take into consideration the patterns observed on the surface of the moon, the phase the moon is in, its visibility through the cloud cover, and the colors of its reflection. In ancient Assyria diviners interpreted the appearance of a ring or halo around the moon as an omen of an impending siege. However, a break in it indicated a fortunate escape.
When interpreting moon reflections and colors, it was believed that:
- Blue tinge – rain was on the way,
- Red tinge – a strong wind was coming
- White tinge – good weather.
In the south of England, it is said that fine days will follow if there is a fine Tuesday after a new moon, moist days will come after a wet or humid Tuesday after a new moon, and if the horns of the moon are obscured on the third or fourth day, this means rain is on the way. If the circle of the moon is red, troubles and hardships are coming.
If if rains on the first Tuesday after the full moon, it will continue to do so for the rest of that moon period. Similarly, if it is dry on that first Tuesday, it will remain dry for that moon period. If the moon is clear on is rising, it denotes that in the summer there will be fine weather but in the winter there will be a severe cold spell. Clearness at the full moon suggests a fair period, as does a halo that melts quickly. A double halo means there is going to be a storm.
An ancient superstition is that it is bad luck to have a child born in moonlight. It was also believed that anyone sleeping in moonlight for any length of time ran the risk of going either blind or crazy.
