The powerful effects of the seasons, the weather, and even the time of day, can subtly affect your magic. Traditionally, these types of magic are performed during these times:

  • SPRING:

Spring is a time for healing; purification, (spring cleaning), psychic awareness; paying bills; fertility; planting magical gardens; and ecological rituals. Air magic.

  • SUMMER:

Summer is a time for love, marriage, friendship, beauty, protection, courage, magical energy, physical energy, and strength. Fire magic.

  • AUTUMN:

Autumn is a time for money, employment, new possessions (including cars and homes). Water magic.

  • WINTER:

A time for banishment of disease, habits and addictions, seeking past lives. This is a time for introspection, meditation, reading, and magical exercises designed to renew the magician for the coming spring. Earth magic.

  • LIGHTNING STORMS:

Lightning storms are periods of intense energy. All spells cast during storms will be empowered by them, and may prove to be more effective. Protection rituals are ideal at these times.

  • RAINSTORMS:

Rainstorms are fine for purification, love, compassion, friendship, beauty rituals, and releasing guilt and jealousy.

  • SNOWSTORMS:

Snowstorms are the time for gentle magic, purification, and stilling emotions. Also a good time to release unrequited love.

  • HEAVY WINDS:

Heavy winds empower rites designed to break addictions, assist study, and travel spells.

  • SEARING HOT DAY:

A searing hot day is an excellent time to charge rites of protection, courage, and energy.

  • SOLAR and LUNAR ECLIPSES:

Eclipses (both solar and lunar) are dramatic moments both for their observers as well as for magicians. In the past, magicians were urged not to perform magic during eclipses. Today, many natural magicians use the suggestive power of an eclipse to fuel spells involving banishment, including the destruction of disease.

  • SUNRISE:

Day begins as light stretches out from the eastern horizon. This is an excellent time to perform rituals involving purification, business success, study, employment, breaking addictions of all kinds, travel, releasing guilt and jealousy, healing diseases, and the conscious mind.

  • NOON:

The sun shines far above at full strength. This is fine for all sunrise ritual purposes, as well as those that involve magical energy, physical energy and strength, protection, money and courage.

  • SUNSET:

The sun slips below the western horizon, signaling the time for breaking addictions, weight-loss, banishing misery and pain, transforming anguish and negative habits.

  • NIGHT:

The sun is out of sight. This is the drowsy time for beauty, dreams, psychic dreams, psychic awareness, spirituality, sleep, sex, purification, love, friendships, peace, releasing stress, healing wounds.

  • WAXING MOON:

From the new moon to the full moon is a time when the Moon is waxing, becoming full. It is a time for beginnings, health and healing, psychic awareness, beauty, fertility and all positive magical workings.

  • FULL MOON:

All positive magical spells are performed beneath the potent glow of the Full Moon, including protection, love, healing, purification, psychic awareness, money and travel.

  • WANING MOON:

From the full moon to the new moon is a time when the Moon is waning, and darkening. This is the time for banishment of habits, addictions, disease and negative thoughts. jealousy, guilt, and hurts are released under the waning Moon. The old is swept away to make room for the new.

Important note:

This does not mean that spells must only be cast during those specific times. These are simply guidelines for optimal times, a spell can be cast whenever it is needed.

Source unknown

Of all the objects you have, the most sacred is yourself. Every other object is a reflection of yourself. Every sacred object reflects your strengths, your vulnerabilities, your joys, and your needs. Each object is sacred only in that it provides a symbolic link between your highest Self and the source of all life and wisdom, in Nature and in Spirit.

Power does not reside in an object. Power cannot be bought, sold, or even chosen in a sacred object. Power is. Power abides. Power can flow through a sacred object as it flows through you. Power can flow around you, but you cannot hold it fast. No one can. No object can. Power is a gift that comes as you walk any magical path.

Honor power for its gifts to you and do not seek to possess it. It will walk beside you on your journey.

The crossroads are literally where different roads meet and where they separate, where opportunity emerges to change directions. They are unpredictable; you could take any one of a variety of choices. Magically speaking a crossroads is the place where multiple forces converge, where anything can happen, where transformations may occur. Energy is liberated and expanded at the crossroads. Instead of hopping over boundaries, you can stand in the center and be inundated by power, potential and choices.

Crossroads are ubiquitous in magic. Many spells demand to be cast at the crossroads, others require that the remnants of spells – left over candle stubs, ashes and the such – be buried at the crossroads where their energy can safely disperse.

Specific types of spiritual entities, known as “road-openers” and inevitably beings of great power preside over crossroads. These beings can be petitioned for knowledge, information and for a change in destiny. They control thresholds and roads and determine who has free access and who finds roads barred, who will choose the right fork in the road and who will wander hopelessly lost forever.

In ancient Greece, Hermes ruled the four-way crossroads, while Hecate presided over three-way crossroads. In West Africa, Eshu-Elegbara rules the crossroads as does his Western hemisphere incarnations Elegba, Papa Legba and Exu. In Brazil, Exu’s female counterpart, Pomba Gira, presides over T-shaped crossroads.

Once upon a time, crossroads were where people met, where nomads rendezvoused, where gallows stood, where the death penalty was enacted and corpses left to hang, where suicides were buried. If magic spells were cast according to direction, then midnight at the crossroads must have frequently been a crowded, busy place, especially on a night like Halloween when the veil that divides the realms of living and dead is at its most permeable, leaving an open road for inter-realm communication.

Christian authorities frequently urged people to avoid the crossroads, particularly at night, as it was the devil’s stomping grounds. If you were looking to meet Satan, however, if you had a proposition or a request for him, the crossroads was where you were most likely to find him.

Unfortunately, the most accessible modern crossroads are traffic intersections. The magic energy remains, however. Think about a busy intersection: on a good day you fly straight through, making a journey faster and easier. A traffic tie-up, however, is an energy build-up with added potential for accidents and road rage.

Faithfully attempting to follow a spell’s directions may leave you playing in the middle of traffic. In Rio de Janeiro, Pomba Gira’s devotees take this into account: offerings aren’t left where you might expect, at the center of the crossroads, but by the side of the road. No matter how powerful your spell, it will have no opportunity to work if you get hit by a car during the casting.

Find an appropriate old-fashioned crossroads, a safe area of a modern crossroads, or read between the lines – figure out what the spell really requires (why you’re being sent to the crossroads, for what purpose) and adapt and substitute as needed. Not all crossroads are literal intersections of roads. Other crossings include: Graveyards, bathhouses, ruins, bike paths, and altars.
