“His beard was all colors, a grove of trees in autumn, deep brown and fire-orange and wine-red, an untrimmed tangle across the lower half of his face. His cheeks were apple-red. He looked like a friend; like someone you had known all your life.”
― Neil Gaiman, Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders

The Color Brown

Brown is the color of dark wood or rich soil. The color is seen widely in nature, in wood, soil, and human hair
color, eye color and skin pigmentation. Brown is a natural color that evokes a sense of strength and
reliability. Brown brings to mind feeling of warmth, comfort, and security. It is often described as natural,
down-to-earth, and conventional.

Brown can mix into many surroundings. It is a mixture of red, blue and yellow and has many shades and tones
- each producing a different effect. Brown can be a stabilizing color. The red in brown gives it practical
energy while the yellow and blue add mental focus energies. Some shades of brown create a warm,
comfortable feeling of wholesomeness, naturalness and dependability. Too much brown can make a dull
effect. Brown gives a feeling of solidity, and allows one to stay in the background, unnoticed.

The colour of Mother Earth, brown brings stability and alleviates insecurity.  It can also relate to repressed
emotions, and narrow-mindedness, resulting from lack of self-worth.  It has much of the serious nature of
black, but is warmer and softer.  Brown can also create feelings of sadness and isolation. Culturally, it is
most often associated with plainness, humility, the rustic, and poverty.

This earthy colour is associated with stability, but also with a tendency to be backward-looking and
uninspired. Brown encourages practicality, but can keep our minds closed to higher matters. Brown is one of
the colours of nature, associated with working with one's hands and the land: don't let its earthiness turn
you blind to emotional matters, or make you too stodgy.

Put some brown in your life when you want:
*  a solid wholesome feeling
*  to blend with the background
*  a connection with natural earth and the stability this brings
*  orderliness and convention

Wearing brown:
Wear brown clothing if you want to show no direction or attitude in particular. Brown is a disguise that
can be used to effectively hide your true nature. Prior to the introduction of denim, brown was the color
worn by manual workers. Warm browns can be worn to exhibit a 'down to earth' feeling.

Loving brown:
*  People who prefer brown are often conventional and orderly. The negative meaning of brown can be a
repressed personality or a lazy person. Brown is the color of the earth and is associated with the
material side of life.
*  If you are attracted to brown, you probably have confidence and freedom from worry, but you might
consider balancing its effects by introducing the opposite colour from the spectrum - minty green - to
encourage you to put your mental powers to better use.

Not loving brown:
A person who has an aversion to brown may feel an aversion against normal, boring, trivial life; may not
feel connected with his roots (home-land, family, etc); may experience instability in health and attitude.

Brown gemstones and minerals:
*  Smoky quartz, picture jasper, petrified wood
