Fear

“I have a credit card and I’m not afraid to use it!”

Mastering Your Mastercard … well that’s a fine title, don’t you think?

Look, a credit card is like a DOG – either you get it under control, or it will control your life and drive you crazy. And cutting up your credit card is like the ultimate admission of DEFEAT – I can’t control my dog so I shot it!

So today, we’re going to release our fear of our credit cards and get our head around the fact that they are very, very useful and can be a tremendous ASSET in our lives – but we must stop being afraid of them first!

In a moment, close your eyes and imagine your credit card (your first, your favourite, your worst!). Take a moment to consider that you’re many times bigger and you have hands and all of that, whereas the card is a very small and flat piece of plastic!

It’s no contest!

Flip the card from one hand into the other and understand that it’s just a form of reverse bank account and that you have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to fear from this, and much to gain if you TREAT IT RIGHT.

Finally just shrink the card to the size of a stamp, then an ant, then make it implode altogether and – go to work.

Scary Stuff

Some of our roadblocks can be directly attributed to fear. Because of this, I thought it would be informative and interesting to make a list of all the stuff that scares us. I have this idea that as we list the things that scare us, we might actually begin to see that some of these things relate to our “I can’t… because…” list.

Here are some suggestions to get us started:

  • I am afraid of…
  • It scares me to…
  • I get scared when…
  • … is way too scary to even think about doing.
  • Yesterday I was afraid to…

Note: I found that I had to sift through the above statements to find the ones that worked for me. As you can see from the examples below, the “I am afraid of…” triggered a lot of nonsense, while the “It scares me to…” started to bring up more truth. The “I get scared when…” brought up some really interesting stuff. The “way too scary” rang true as well. And the “Yesterday I was afraid…” brought up something that actually scared me as soon as I wrote it!

  • I am afraid to be alone. (not true).
  • I am afraid of monsters, spiders, creatures in the night. (again… not true)
  • It scares me to climb up a ladder. (truth)
  • It scares me to talk to people I don’t know. (truth)
  • I get scared when I don’t know what to do next. (interesting… it might be true)
  • I get scared when I think someone doesn’t like me. (really?… yes, I think so… hmmm I wonder why)
  • Putting myself “out” there, in person, is way too scary to even think about doing. (very true)
  • Jumping out of an airplane is way too scary to even think about doing. (also very true)
  • Yesterday I was afraid to tell someone the truth about what I was really thinking. (yikes! Right now I am frightened by the fact that I actually said that out loud on the internet. LOL)

As always, if you learn something interesting from this exercise, I’d love to hear about it.

Something Scary

Did you ever notice how the things we are the most frightened of almost always turn out to be impermanent constructions of our own imagination? Like this sand sculpture?

It looks so real.. and then time goes by, the tide comes in, maybe it rains, and our carefully created masterpiece of disaster disintegrates into oblivion .. and we look around and everything really is OK.

Of course, sometimes there is a typhoon, or a tsunami, or a volcanic eruption, or an earthquake. But in my experience, those types of things almost inevitably happen on a really nice day with no warning, and no worrying at all. Suddenly KABAM!!! disaster strikes out of no where.

At any rate, it’s something to think about.

Today I am planning to step out of my box a little bit and make at least one call to some place scary and out of my box. Actually talk to an actual person, share a moment of prayer with a totally sincere individual who totally disagrees with my version of reality. If any of you want to share the adventure with me, that would be great.

Here are some numbers to choose from if you decide to make a really scary call:

Guide Posts: If you would like to pray “live” with a prayer volunteer, please call our Prayer Line at: 1-800-204-3772 – Monday through Friday from 7:00 am-10:00 pm EST.

A.R.E. Prayer Services department continues a tradition begun by the original Glad Helpers Prayer Group started by Edgar Cayce back in 1931. This might be interesting, too bad it’s not an 800 number. Prayer Request Line (757) 428-3588, (ext. 7551). There was no mention of their hours of operation, but I would assume that it is NOT 24/7.

The Upper Room Living Prayer Center is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week intercessory prayer ministry staffed by Christian volunteers. When you call, a person will answer the phone, receive your prayer request, and pray with you. After your call, your prayer concern will be forwarded to one of 300 Upper Room Covenant Prayer Groups located all over the world, who will pray for your request for an additional 30 days. Number to call is: 1-800-251-2468
